A jump overcall of 2NT shows 5 cards in each of the two lowest unbid suits.
- 1♣ – 2NT = hearts and diamonds
- 1♦ – 2NT = hearts and clubs
- 1♥ – 2NT = both minor suits
- 1♠ – 2NT = both minor suits
How strong does the hand have to be?
The most important point is that your suits must be good. A useful rule of thumb is that each suit should contain two of the top four honors. You don’t have to have an opening hand – just good suits, so the strength may vary. The reason that you need to have good suits is that the auction will be forced to the 3-level.
South shows both minors and when North bids 5♦
, all East can do is double. 5♦
will go down by one, but that’s a good sacrifice for North and South because East and West would have made 4♠
