JaneMart wrote Ah! But @terrypause, if you don't bid 4 spades on the first round, you get faced with another decision as to whether to double or bid them on the second.. Double turns out marginally better, but the important thing is don't panic.

JaneMart wrote It all came down to those spades in the end. If I'd gambled on East having the Ace (but not the Queen), I'd have made contract. But I didn't. I gambled on West having the Ace. There lies the difference between a good score and a pretty rotten one. Should I have picked up clues to help be guess?

JaneMart wrote He may have had 13 points, but he didn't have much of a suit so any bid would have been misleading. Often it's better to leave them in 1NT and hope to get them down. If blame is to be placed, I think South should have bid hearts - 9HCP plus 2 length points... Personally, I didn't - and went on to let them make 9 tricks so lose.lose on both counts.
JaneMart wrote Whoops @997maybe. Not a good day for you! Don't let it get you down as tomorrow you will be back close to your usual average (or above). That is, maybe you will. 997 times out of a 1000?

rpsoroban wrote Yes @Janemart but if North had responded to the diamonds we might have got them down!! If computers can have a thing together N is certainly having one with E! That's two days running N has done something bizarre

Player4 wrote @JaneMart I owe you thanks! You commented recently that playing later in the day had helped your scores recover. I tried it and two days over 80% had me thinking you were right. Today I played five hands early and retired with an average of 55.2%. Finishing off this morning my five hands averaged 94.4% for an overall of 74%. Will keep testing the theory! But thank you for the suggestion.

JaneMart wrote A 1NT response is a conventional thingy meaning 6-9/10 points. It also means you don't have a fit and he can't think of anything more helpful to bid. On this occasion he didn't have 6 points (unless you count that singleton diamond (your suit) as useful).but hey! we all take a little poetic license every so often.
JaneMart wrote PS Forgot the most important bit - 1NT response to 1 of a suit shows nothing about shape.
Bajir wrote Good question @bellindap and thank you @janemart! Bellindap, I was wondering the same thing. Just wanted to make sure you knew you can tap on any bid in the auction panel to find out it's meaning. Hope that helps!

JaneMart wrote Same as @Rahamrick. I lost the first spade trick to the 9♠, so thought we were doomed. Couldn't believe our luck when West, (faced with a pile of spade winners and the Ax) chose to lead the x.

JaneMart wrote Learnt on the first trick the E had K, so I really wanted her to have to lead them. Also, I didn't want to lead spades with that K as my only (rather fragile) stopper. So I took the clubs and fiddled with the diamonds in the hopes their leads would help me out. They did. Good oh.
