JaneMart wrote If North had been opener I expect he would have bid 3C, but West had already opened so it was (maybe) a bit late for a preemptive bid. I would have done it anyway, but then I don't mind losing quite often by taking a chance - I think North has been taught to stick by 'the rules' more strictly.

JaneMart wrote Whatever it was Bajir, I thought the same thing for a moment. It just seemed so attractive to sit with my AK over East's bid. The hint made me think again though - along with that pesky word "forcing" which was ringing round my still sleepy head.

JaneMart wrote A bit of a disastrous hand for me too, but North wasn't as stupid as it felt. The A followed by the Q drew the K and left me with 3 winning diamond tricks in waiting. It was just a pity I never got the lead to use them.
wadkin37 wrote wadkin37@JaneMart same here and at the penultimate trick I discarded the wrong card.

JaneMart wrote Oh well. If we could all say it was only on the penultimate trick we made the wrong discard we'd all be giving the likes of graeme a run for their money.

North led A, Q

On this hand, we have players going away with the impression that they played poorly and that a better player would have done better. Sometimes in these circumstances I just need to find out what happened.

Here is one scenario in this hand: simply a different order of play of the same two discards can change the result by 2 tricks.

The first 5 trick leads probably are A-Q from North, then W-E-W ♠8, ♣5, ♣4. South follows suit. At this point South has 2 spades, 3 hearts and 3 diamonds. On the 6th trick East leads ♣A; South has to start discarding. On trick #6 and #7, if I discard 6 then ♠9, EW makes 9 tricks: North plays ♠K on trick #8 and I don’t get the lead again, but can take the last trick. But if I simply reverse those first two discards, discarding ♠9 then 6, then on trick #8 North drives out East’s A with a 4 lead, I get the lead on trick #11, and make the last 3 tricks keeping EW to 7 tricks.
