Bajir wrote Felt like it might be a good hand to open a 4.5 card spade suit despite playing 5 card majors. I think it worked out well this time as West then bid 1NT, but wonder if it is enough to justify misleading partner like this. Sorry, pard!

Bajir wrote Thanks for bringing this up @janemart. Still thinking about it. I took a similar approach and opened a weak 2 but I think you're right... maybe better to just open 1H and let the auction play out and possibly end up in game?

@Bajir, are you not counting length points? I also contemplated a pre-empt until I counted HCP points, added 3 for length, and came up with 12 (it’s actually 14). I seem to have a resistance to the Rule of 20, but it is probably useful, as well. It’s also interesting that our brains look at length and may think “pre-empt” rather than “strength.” (Like you, I ended in 3 due to my inability to accept the fact that Partner will not interpret a rebid from opener as 6 cards for 5-card major people.)

P.S. @Graeme any interest in returning Settings and Bidding to Replies? I also miss the time stamp. IMHO information is more important than streamlined appearance (assuming that was your goal). No offense, and best wishes. As my Aunt used to say, “Difference of opinion is what makes horse races.” But then there is, "The customer is always right."
