• Hi Graeme
Interesting one. I have discussed this often and my regular partner is adamant about opening 1NT with 5 card majors.
Of course it doesn’t work out best every time. So, like a lot of decision making […]

  • Hi Graeme
I agree with your comments on Stayman with certain hands BUT I suspect you are only thinking of
those who play STRONG 1NT !! And, probably 5 card majors !
    Playing weak 1Nt and 4 Card Majors, I’ll […]

Thanks, Bajir. Very helpful!! It just seems odd that if you bid game and make it doubled you could score less than if you only went for a two level bid. Yes, you might make 2 tricks above the double but you didn’t risk going to game so do you REALLY deserve a higher score. Keep up the good work you do on the game analysis. Very thoughtful…

Could you please answer these questions?

    Hi Unixman
What did your 5N mean? What did the 6D mean?
    Thanks

    • 4NT was ace asking
5NT How many Kings do you have
      6D I have one King 🙂

all that in theory my 4NT was actually a limit bid inviting 6NT still got there so it was all good

Interesting. I also don’t understand how North takes DOUBLES. I responded 2NT with 10 HCPs and diamonds covered.
North jumped to 4H which we made

I’m not sure how I best direct a general question to you rather than on a specific hand.
    But here goes:

Please could you explain the lead system employed by North in different situations.
Also, the signal system in card play!!

    That would be very helpful!

    Cheers

Interesting that both 4 & 5 card major players open a Club.

Under my 4 card system with 4 Hearts or 4 Spades you open those in preference to a minor and if 4 of each major
you open hearts first to give partner a chance to bid 1S if holding 4 spades.

East didn’t support West’s pre-emptive 1NT. North must have 5 hearts. A game is potentially on with an 8 card fit.
South’s 11 pt hand is very supportive. Go for 4H in South . A 3H bid might only indicate 4 card heart support [bidding to the level of the fit].
As it plays, South’s spade winners can give North diamond discards. Nice fit sometimes…

Personally wouldn’t raise South 12-14 1NT with that hand.

Leading the unbid suit v NTs with a poor doubleton is dubious.
Go with your own strength even if it has been bid especially if to the left of the bidder.

  • Correction. If South bids NTs on second round then West leads a spade that gives the 9th trick!!
The computer doesn’t indicate on “scores” who had the contract. [The old site DID !] Often it makes a difference as to whether it was N or S.

  • Wrong reply by North to my 1C opener. Show hearts at one level BEFORE diamonds!! Basic!
This ended in 3NTS instead of a heart contract.

  • Interest drroflstomp ! I opened Hearts!
Can you explain why you would open a club?

  • Good point!
Opening with 19 and partner responding at 2 level indicates a min. of say 28/29.
North has an opening hand [13 pts] so 32 pts combined.
With South’s 6 loser hand it is a bit marginal. Difficult for South to show 19 pt strength other
    than going to 3NT.
It would be interesting to see how 6NT bidders got there. The old site used to show…

  • Try it again! Bid1H. Then after N’s 1S -Bid 3NTS.
Opposition donates AC. You then run Hearts, Clubs and Spades in that order.
    Like shelling peas!

  • 3NT makes 13 because West foolishly doesn’t put up QH in 2nd position after AD has gone.
    North cashes 6 more diamonds.
