Don’t Count, Visualize!

07 08, 2018 - Hand 2

Graeme and Bajir have a special new series for our Royals! In the next few videos, they’ll be covering hand visualization, a skill that makes a huge difference when playing or defending a hand. Don’t just count. Visualize. (And nevermind West who throws @graeme a curveball)

So much of cardplay comes down to recognizing a few common number patterns that add up to bridge’s favorite number, 13. Mastering these simple patterns will make keeping track of suits and distributions much quicker and easier. It will save you from many headaches like forgetting how many cards of a suit you started with, or checking whether you’ve pulled all the trump yet.

Check out today’s video, where Graeme and Bajir manage to get a perfect count on the hand…or do they!?

I played that badly, but I’m glad I redoubled. I figured E/W were having trouble finding a suit and expected them to bid again, but didn’t see how it could do any harm. (I might have thought a bit longer if I’d realised we were vulnerable).

Wow @graeme How did you make 10 tricks out of that!! Is it taking the first round of clubs from N instead of S?? I see some people make 11. I could only manage 8 tricks.

@hagleyjazz Set up clubs before drawing the last trump, then you have two entries to North to cash them, heart king and the spade 10 (because the jack dropped)

@hagleyjazz Take a chance and rough the 3rd round of clubs from North (lead the K first to draw the Ace, then lead the QC). Also made a diamond on the final trick for 11 🙂

I was never doubled so it is impossible to be competitive. Bid 4%uFE0F and made 5. Poor score compared with those who were doubled. Why do the responses from the computer differ so much?

Of the folks I follow, only the 4 card major bidders were doubled. @graeme was also doubled. Is that why?

didn’t think 4S was a good idea since opponents had 15-20 pts between them…made 12 tho. Oh well! Better to be acol on this on anyway – 2Sxx!

Boy! I really messed this hand up, but thanks to @jckspar I went from 8s to 11s. I don’t know why I found this hand so difficult.
