Precision Has Its Limits

06 11, 2018 - Hand 5
73_AQ43_AK93_AT2

Today Graeme covers an auction that has generated a lot of discussion. Partner has opened, and we’ve got a beautiful 17 count with support for partner’s hearts. What’s our next step?

There is more than one reasonable approach, depending on your bidding system. But some advice remains good for everybody: think about what information you need from partner, and whether you’ll be able to get it. If asking a question won’t help you, then don’t ask it!

See if you can find the right spot on this one, and then watch the video to get Graeme’s analysis. Also, check out our lesson on Losing Trick Count, a helpful concept for many hands like these.

Those who made 13 must have had a different lead. I was lead a diamond and trumped on first round. Still made 12

Just bad luck for you I guess @maryshaw, but well done for bidding slam. Those of us who settled for 4 were well frustrated at being in such a lowly contract from the moment we saw the hands.

Was going to ask for aces but decided to go slow. When partner showed a minimum (didn’t he?) I just went to 4. Sad! But what fun to have a lay down 13 after the club lead!

@kbalagopal In my book 2 was a minimum. In truth we both had a bit extra. Partner’s suit is a bit broken but with that holding and a diamond fit I might have tried 3 instead of 2. On the other hand we might have taken the bull by the horns as others did.

  9. jeffs says:

North’s 2 hearts does show a minimum hand, but still probably 12 to 15 points. North has maximum of 4 points in hearts, so where are his other 8 to 11 points? Once you start looking at your hand in that light it makes it look SO much stronger and must be worth going for the slam.

I didn’t, but shouldn’t we have jumped from 1h to 4h with 13 points.. what would partner do then? I guess I knew the point score better than he did though.

  12. tessybear says:

@gwendolinej – in my opinion you were too strong to jump to 4h as you had 17 points – N would never had known that and had I been N I would have passed as I would have taken you to say “I feel we do not have slam – just game” So I asked for A’s instead because of our point count and bid 6h making 13.

  13. colinjohn says:

@gwendolinej – my reasoning was similar to @tessbear and knowing my HCP and that North had an opening hand I went directly to 6H after Norths 2H bid and ignored the hint. I did consider asking North for the remaining Ace but ran out of courage and played safe with 6H rather than 7. I did make 7 and remonstrated with myself.

  14. chance22 says:

    6H, 12 tricks
Opening lead: East: (I guess it’s pretty clear that those who bid diamonds short-circuited the diamond lead that kept heart contracts to 12.)

I imagine it was a bit easier for 5-card major people to see the slam possibilities right away, with 9 hearts along with a minimum of 29-30 points. I didn’t want to beat around the bush at that point, and then once Partner revealed the A, it seemed pretty safe. That A could have moved us towards NT, but in slam I almost always stay with a suit contract for safety. This was an unexpected, unwelcome illustration of how sometimes NT can be safer.

In the video I mention this lesson, but it’s not the most important part of the video.

The most important part of the video is:
“I dunno, partner, but looks good to me. Let’s make this baby fly”

Birdlady My computer wasn’t tracking well and when I hit submit or whatever I came across the game, This was before Graemes analysis. So I dutifully bid 3 hearts(product of training) and went on to take 12 tricks. I just didn’t bid it. Liked the lesson. Thanks Graeme,
