It’s All About the Long Run

05 31, 2018 - Hand 1
J_QJ9_KQ9865_AJ8

Today’s hand is not an easy one to bid. We’ve got opening strength and some shape, and a good diamond suit. But the auction quickly gets messy.

What should we be thinking about in these situations? How can we know where to place the contract? First, we must evaluate how well our hand goes with partner’s hand.

The best evaluation takes into account all the information you have available, so take a good look the auction and try to deduce which cards of yours will lead to tricks. There’s more to it than just counting your high card points! And remember, in bridge, you can’t make judgments based on a single result.

Not an auspicious start to the day. Was I foolish to wonder about slam? I was hoping we had all 4 aces, and missing one felt like a good reason to stop at 5, but too late… I was already up to the 5-level which made all the difference for me here.

@bajir Why did they open 1 club one this hand?????? Hmm I play opening with a 4 card suit not 3. It would be useful to play my way lol

How to make 12 tricks? Surely can’t skirt round the A, so it must be possible to catch the K. I can’t see how though…

    • player4 says:

@janemart I made 12! East led a spade, which I took with the jack and I led a diamond to clear the ace. East led another spade which I took with the ace then played out my diamonds, discarding spades and hearts and watching east discard hearts. Then led the clubs, leaving me in south hand. Played QH – and the king dropped to my ace leaving me with the winning JH. Top board – so I’d better take a break and have some sustenance.

@ozchick I agree. why would west chuck the HK and retain the SK when partner had 2xH left in hand? But still would have made 5 even if west played HK on my HJ for the last trick.

Partner is showing 4 card hearts so this will be a 4-3 weak heart trump fit. West bid so chances are we have a heart trump loser. Partner bid clubs and hearts so diamonds could be singleton here…When I was bidding I saw a lot of problems of misfit. I was thinking about getting a 3N contract but at that point partner was not showing a spade stopper… I did not like bidding diamond again because it could be passed. so I jumped to stop at 4H. It turned out that 3N was a much better contract and maybe with Axxx north could have bid 2N rather than 2 hearts…Any thoughts folks?

  12. Interesting. I chose to rebid 4D to show 6th D, partner passed, contract made 11. What would our standing have been if bid had been 5D, making 11? American Standard. I could only see a 7 card heart fit.

  27. pne2nw says:

Best defence: East leads KS so setting up a spade trick (if North ducks East then leads a small spade). Together with AD and KH, the defence win 3 tricks. A four hearts contract relies on a 3-3 split which, if opponents did not bid at all, has a 36% probability. With East overcalling in spades, often twice, the best guess is that hearts will split 5-1 and therefore the contract is a poor one.

Surprised that could. Key seemed forcing trumps out opponents hands then KH on low lead from hand with AH giving me top 3 after trick.Only able to loose 2 tricks make me understand that better to leave in 3NT, and probably scores more. Still learning
