2NT Openers & Transfers

-

Everyone loves a big, balanced hand! They are usually easy to describe, so your partner ends up deciding the contract. With a balanced 20-22 points, or a similar range, open 2NT.

If you are playing Jacoby transfers, partner will bid the suit under his five card major if he has one. Otherwise, his major suit bids are natural. Make sure you know what system you are playing so you can recognize your partner’s bids quickly.

Transfers are a great tool since they keep the strong hand concealed and they allow responder to bid twice to describe his hand.

Oddly partner has the controlling hand for what contract, not South who has too many losers. Never ignore a 5 card major – so a game in spades assured but I played safe this morning so missed the slam bid.

@graeme @bajir Transfers gives another option you didn’t mention; when S transfers to 3S, N can pass. Without transfers, would North’s 3S normally be weak? Or invitational? Or game forcing?

My cheat sheet says open 2NT w/ 20-21 balanced, and open 2Clubs w/ 22+ (strong artificial, any shape, forcing). I opened 2NT w/ 22 pts. at a game recently & partner passed w/ their 4 pts. (they had a 4 card major). I’d thought showing my balanced hand important. Does everyone tend to play 2C is forcing & 2NT can be passed? Hate missing chance w/ such a strong hand. Thank U all for any input!

    • janemart says:

@vestelene My cheat sheet says you can pass 2NT with 3 or less points. The rationale is that in general, you need 25 points between you for game, so if you don’t have that, and partner has promised a balanced hand, you may as well stick with what you can make.
A 2 club opening is different, because it doesn’t mean anything about wanting to play in clubs… So, yes, it’s always forcing although if you respond 2 diamonds partner will know you have almost nothing so it’s down to them to decide what to do.

(My cheat sheet also says 2NT shows 20-22 points. If you play 20-21, that may explain why your partner felt OK about passing with 4 points). But hey! What’s a point between friends? They’re a guide, not the answer to everything.

  15. I usually play
    2NT with 20-21 points
2C followed by 2NT with 22-23 points (partner can still pass with 0 points)
    2D followed by 2NT with 24-25 points
since this system plays 2D as weak, it doesn’t work here, so it probably makes sense to open 2NT with 20-22 points and 2C with 23 points (which you don’t pass).

I play 2C strong opening bid with 22 points. Then a convention response of 2S would indicate 7-9 points…and then you bid what you think you can make. I’ll try again not using this .

  20. johna says:

6NT looked like it needed two finesses, but when W took his Ace upfront the two hearts can be taken so a squeeze allows the club finesse to be avoided in the endplay. I confess I had already played the hand so I knew either finesse works. I had previously intended to play 6S but partner left me in 4NT instead of responding to Blackwood, so I replayed it and just bid it.
