Don’t Miss a Fit!

-

For ACOL players, it’s important to find the 5-3 major suit fits when we have them. The first thing to consider is our point count. Can we open 1NT, or are we too strong? Once we open a 5-card major at the one level, we’re happy to play there as long as partner has 3 or more in our suit. Since partner can’t support our major with his first bid if he’s only got three, we have to wait for his rebid. If partner raises our major on his second bid, we know he has secondary support for our suit. On a side note, we usually want to play in a 4-4 major fit rather than a 5-3, if we have the option.

I am with Susan on this one. With 5 spades and a doubleton, I think starting with the suit bid is preferable to NT. After North jumps in spades, it is tempting to bid 3 NT. That may well be the better score. But in fact, we are vulnerable to a club lead. Since North had originally passed, I think slam is unlikely and did not explore it. I am happy with the 4 spade contract (although as it turned out we did make 12!).

Looking at my hand from the outset I’m thinking No Trumps but because I play a weak one I cannot open it so…………………I try a Paul Mendelson idea ……………I open the suit which would be the worst suit for me in No trumps ie Clubs (Only one stopper) ..I decide that with any raise from my partner I’m going to Three No trumps ..which is what I bid .

West then has to decide what to lead ……….Clubs which I bid ? surely not ! ……..Diamonds from a straggly four card suit ? No …………..that leaves Spades and Hearts …..West decides on his longest suit the Spades which works perfectly for me ….Its my longest suit too !……..After extracting the Ace of Spades from West (He still doesn’t lead Clubs from his King doubleton ) I move on to take the rest of the tricks making 12 tricks in No trumps.

Bid and kept 6 spades. Gave away only for spade ace. Other possible losers were; one in hearts and one in club. When West led a heart after taking with the Spade ace, East covered with the king and all hearts scored. Club loser was discarded on extra diamond in dummy. Had to pull trumps by playing 4 times to prevent any ruffing. Easy game.

  30. Years ago my father taught me to play Goren bridge. I don’t remember everything I was taught and the rules have changed so much since then I don’t really know how to play anymore. Thus, I have joined this group to update and refresh my play. With 16 -18 points and a relatively balanced hand I took the chance of opening with 1 NT because I was sitting 3rd seat. Under the old rules I understand I asked my partner for best major suit, either of which I could support. When N answered 2 NT I assumed he had no 4 card major and a balanced hand. How did the computer actually interpret my bid? I probably did not communicate what I intended. Anyway, I took a dive and bid 3 NT. Slam was not something I anticipated, but I made 12 tricks. Am happy with how I bid and played this hand. But, how would you have interpreted my bid of 1 NT if you had been sitting North? Any help to guide me from Goren to modern play would help. Thanks.

I opened 1NT played 3NT and made 11. I led the JH to draw the KH but would have played the AH if E ducked, to ensure making 11 cold. If W has the K They might run clubs. The one time finesse presumably does work by leading a low heart if E puts up the K again which is covered by the A leaving JH to win last trick for 12 tricks, although this relies on E putting up the K, which he doesn’t need to.
