For ACOL players, it’s important to find the 5-3 major suit fits when we have them. The first thing to consider is our point count. Can we open 1NT, or are we too strong? Once we open a 5-card major at the one level, we’re happy to play there as long as partner has 3 or more in our suit. Since partner can’t support our major with his first bid if he’s only got three, we have to wait for his rebid. If partner raises our major on his second bid, we know he has secondary support for our suit. On a side note, we usually want to play in a 4-4 major fit rather than a 5-3, if we have the option.
