Should I defend 1NT or bid my best suit?

Do I double or bid my 5-card major?
December 20, 2017

Hey, That’s My Suit!

-

Every so often, bridge will give us a truly crazy deal. Wild distributions and spirited auctions are some of the reasons we love the game. Situations like these are not easy to prepare for–you just have to rely on your wits to make it through to the next board! Check out this deal where Tina’s left-hand opponent wasn’t very discouraged by her overcall.

Thanks @tina I didn’t call my spades but we ended up in the same place. I trumped the last club which was silly.

Why, oh why, after winning the first trick with the Ace of clubs would West play another club from dummy? (!)
If I did that I wouldn’t blame my partner for walking out. The second round should have been the Ace of
diamonds and a club discard followed by the Queen of hearts which should run to the King. At least then there is a chance, although an unlikely one, of a later trick with the Jack of hearts in dummy after winning with the Ace of hearts when the opposition eventually get the lead if the opposition were to lead a heart to dummy’s jack. In that scenario the contract would make.
More likely, and woe betide North if he doesn’t lead the Queen of clubs after making the King of hearts which South lets run, North would know that West is also trumping clubs on the next round so North would have to switch to diamonds (unless he wants to gift the heart trick to dummy) which is trumped by West who cashes the Ace of Hearts and runs the trumps for two trump losers to go one down.

@Tina Thank you, Tina. Your going over the bidding and play of the hand is always very helpful. I had chosen not to overcall because I didn’t
think the quality of my spades was good enough. We ended up in 4 spades which I Xd.

Yes, I should have doubled. I do not double enough. Thanks for the reminder @tina.

I did not overcall and did not double, fearing that my QT of spades could be finessed. I like a little more for an overcall, and there is no guarantee North’s bid would translate to any tricks. As it happens West could have pitched a club on the Ace of diamonds and then tried the heart finesse, making 4 if it worked (losing 2 spades and one club only. It does not work, but it shows why the hand is too close for me to double.

Would never have thought of overcalling with this hand because of point count nor would I have doubled after opponent took my bid but after watching video, changed my mind. Learned a lot from watching Tina’s video! Thank you and I will be more aggressive with my bidding from now on.
