A Fit With a Side of Shortness

-

Oh, a beautiful dummy–one of the great joys of bridge. What sets some dummies apart? Offensive value is one big reason. If your hand has good support for partner’s suit, partner may be able to get some ruffs. And even better, if you have shortness in your hand, partner will be able to set up those ruffs quickly. If your hand has these qualities, make sure to take them into account in the bidding!

I think North ought to have gone to game since he could guess that I have four spades and only one heart, not to mention that my points would likely be in diamonds.

I was way too chicken (fluffy). The hint said bid 3 on the first round which I thought was overly ambitious. So settled for a 2 bid and got the deserved result. Really should have looked at it’s strengths as per Graeme.

I suspect very few people playing 4 card majors will have bid this to game. Not knowing North has 5 spades, it seems to me that a 4S response would be a little reckless @graeme. But, given my support for spades, north’s knowledge of his own hand (five spades, 15 hcp and an AK doubleton) I’m a bit surprised he didn’t bid 3S. Then a 4S bid from me is much more likely.

  21. trump says:

I must admit I do get confused with responses. I liked the look of the hand, especially with a singleton in opponants suit, so was tempted to just go to game. However as I was low on points I ‘played by the book’ and handed that decision to partner, who only went to 3S so left it there. Made 12 so was kicking myself! When you explain it @graeme you make it sound so obvious. I should trust my instinct more, it can be a good thing and adds to the fun!

    • tina says:

@ladygaga It’s early days for you to remember this but, when you have a singleton and a good trump fit, you can add extra points for the singleton – at least 3 points. That would mean that you can bid 3S and partner will then go to game. This only works when you have a trump fit. Good question!

Rather startled to make 12 tricks on 22 HCP. My 3S bid was definitely borderline (I play the bid as invitational), but I felt that the 9 card trump fit and my 10 points (with the distributionals in the form of a singleton in opponents’ suit) justified an optimistic view, especially if N had even a little extra.

  47. pne2nw says:

If declarer could see both of the NS hands before the auction he/she could judge the probability of making a small slam as only about 27%. That is because, as well as losing to the HA, there is a 50% chance of the KD being with west and that is combined with a 53% chance of dropping SQ under the AK – either because of a 2-2 split(40.7%) or because in a 3-1 split the Q is the singleton(1/4 of 49.7%). 0.50 x 0.53 = 0.27. Other low-probability distributions of the EW cards – not here considered – will reduce even the 27% estimate.
More generally using ACOL, a problem can arise, depending how the partnership deals with 4-4-4-1 hands, from a suit bid at the 1-level if one assumes that that shows either a 5-card (especially heart) suit or 15 HCP. Those 4-4-4-1 hands can be tough.
