Careful, Don’t Draw Trumps!

-

When you’ve got a really strong hand, overcalling isn’t good enough! With 18+, you should double first and then bid your suit. Watch as Bajir and Graeme bid this hand with killer spades. Then see how they take advantage of their short suits in dummy to ruff away their hand’s losers. Importantly, they don’t draw drumps first! Drawing trumps may cost you some ruffs!

  1. A good hand to remember our classic question… should we draw trumps first or try something different?

Tried to get partner to bid by doubling twice. Had planned to X then bid 2NT but E bid 2nd suit club. No cover. Figured N had no points but hoped for 4 wee Spades. No way would N bid somI decided to go for it in 4S. Messed up the first time then saw how to only lose 3 tricks. Tricky to play.

Drew trumps too soon first time out and went down two. Ruffed clubs first on replay and made the 10. Probably best to use the trumps in partner’s trumps to ruff first when their hand is as weak as this one?

An overcall in 1NT shows 16 to 18 whereas a 2Nt overcall is 20 to 22 (ACOL). Why does North respond 3H which is transfer to Hearts. This is wrong as North did not hold 5 hearts, so it cant bid 3H, I assumed North bid correctly so i completed transfer and bid 3S. To my amazement, North bid 4H. Thinking this showed strength i bid 4NT (Blackwood) and got 5C reply (no aces) so i was forced into 5H. Can the site managers please ensure that North bids correctly, otherwise you will get a mish mash of mickey mouse bids that dont reflect correct biding,

    • graeme says:

Hi @ijohn, @sable, an opening bid of 2NT shows 20-22 but this 2NT isn’t an opening bid, it’s an overcall. A jump overcall of 2NT is the unusual notrump showing the two lowest unbid suits. You’re showing hearts and clubs this time which is why North bid 3H. Hope that helps for next time.

      • ijohn says:

Hi. I agree that 2UNT shows the 2 lowest unbid suits, but this bid has to be agreed by partner. In the absence of any agreement it is an overcall. I have the EBU convention and bidding guide in front of me and it shows that an overcall of 2NT shows 20 to 22 HCP, and that further bidding is as if after a 2NT opening.
I did mention some while back about extending your bidding range, especially with cue bids, and you told me you had no plans to extend the current bidding systems, so unless 2NT overcall is now included in your profile settings, it has to remain as an overcall, or do we agree to disagree (lol).. John

        • graeme says:

Happy to agree to disagree, @ijohn. That’s bridge! I respect your opinion and really appreciate your input into the discussions. That doesn’t change even if we’re not always on the same page with our bidding systems.

  26. squarepeg61 says:

The suggestions always recommended to me to start out with a double, allowing North to choose a suit. When North declined, the suggestions took me into four spades which–at least, for me–always went down one. On replay, I tried one spade for my first bid, which West doubled and North raised to two spades. East doubled two spades and the bidding ended there. Claimed nine tricks, which yielded a much better result than the four spade contract.

The demand X is of course the right bid. But I didn’t think of it. I figured that 1 spade could be seen as fairly weak, and it would get passed around, such that we ended up with a partial score, when in fact game was a good possibility. As others demonstrated, 2 spades is misinterpreted, while 3 spades would be misinterpreted, as well. I took a leap of faith and jumped right to game in spades, which worked out o.k. (made 10). But I see now that the demand X was the right way to go.

Thankyou ijohn. I too first bid 2NT showing 20-21 Balanced. Was surprised to see you were the only other to do so. Still wondering if we were wrong since we are the odd ones out. I too took my partners next bid to be a transfer, so when they rebid their hearts I was surprised. Can only make the contract in 4 Spades with ruffing, which I didn’t do at first.
