Two-Suiter Strategy

-

With a 6-4 hand, sometimes it’s hard to know what to rebid. Generally, weaker hands should rebid the longer suit while stronger hands should introduce the second suit. Take a look at what Tina does with this very nice two-suiter after a 1NT response from partner. In the play, the time-tested strategy of pulling trump and then setting up the best side suit is the way to go.

Best to show the second suit here, hearts, rather than rebid 2S immediately. First of all, partner might have a whole bunch of hearts and not enough points to show them on the first round because responder’s new suit at the 2 level shows 10 points. Secondly, 1NT as a response doesn’t have to be balanced so partner might not have any spades. Finally, if partner does like spades better than hearts he can always revert to 2S.

I’m so proud, @Graeme, I did one of your tricks and kept going back to spades which paid off at the end.

@Graeme, I want to thank you. I have been wondering when 1no was responded, did it have to be a balanced hand? Now I know.

The hint said I should pass after partners 1NT because we didn’t have enough points for game. But I thought that was a bit dodgy given my weakness in and . – and the fact that a 1NT response doesn’t show a balanced hand.

@janemart I’m with you on this. Ignore the hints! After bidding the hearts my hint suggested 4S because we had a fit in spades. Partner’s 1 NT response did not tell me he had 2 spades, only 6-9 points, any shape. Seems it makes 11 tricks in either major however.

I’m with both of you, @janemart and @player4. Ignore the hints! – and yes, I freely admit to being the person most responsible for the hints. If I removed the hints completely I think the world would collapse, or my inbox would anyway, but you’re better off doing your own thing most of the time.

        • janemart says:

@graeme I totally disagree and it’ll be a long time before I ignore the hints. Sometimes I disagree with them and (if I’m right), that gives me a buzz. But other times they point out weird and wonderful bids like reverses. Please don’t even think about removing them. We all like a second opinion on matters and if we don’t agree – well, that’s up to us.

It doesn’t make any difference here but it is also worth noting that with a double fit ( & ) you can often get one more trick if the trumps are the shorter (4/4) rather than the longer (6/2) fit.

Given the shape of south’s hand should S jump when rebidding H ? Then N would not have passed?

Your 2H bid was fine, @romey78. If North has a weaker hand and not as many hearts you’ll be glad to be in a partscore. North will raise to 3H but you need to reload your game screen to get the updated bidding code. Just close it open it again. Please let me know if you have any trouble with that.
