Top of a Sequence

-

We’ve all heard the rule before, but why is it that we lead top of a sequence? How do we know whether to lead 4th best or top of a sequence, when both options are available? What can partner learn from each of those two options? Check out Graeme and Bajir’s analysis in this latest video in our opening leads series.

  1. When shouldn’t I lead 4th highest? What does leading the top of a sequence tell partner?

@dlash It’s times like that I find Bob Marley helps. “Singin’ don’t worry about a thing.” I’ve taken to singing it a lot since I joined Sky Bridge.

Tried it again. Bid the same way. This time a different play to dummy twice leading hearts. East played the Ace second time around…and east let the ace of spades after the ace of clubs and I brought it home to 3 no. A wiser player might have seen that play earlier than I. Stay awake!

How is this a 1NT opener with just 14 high-card points?

  9. davstevens says:

When East opened 1NT it was passed out. With only 14 HCP in my system I cannot double (I need 15-18). I led a top heart and eventually took three hearts, two spades, two diamonds, and a club.

I led the top of the Heart sequence, and made 8 tricks, setting them 2 and scoring 100. I thought that wasn’t too bad until I saw the score. Good score, but not near the top.

Thanks for the help, @bcoughlin, I didn’t make my 3NT first time but then followed your instruction and did it, but E didn’t throw that Ac!

@davstevens, I’ve read that you can do a take-out double with as few as 11pts. I do it with 13 if I’m looking for an 8-card major. I see other people have bid the same thing. However, I don’t think N had any business bidding 3NT with 8pts.
