Detective Work at the Table

-

There is so much information to be gathered from partner’s bids. Some of it requires a bit of detective work, as on this deal. Partner has rebid his suit at the three level. Can you find out where his high card points are located?

I doubled first in case partner had 4 hearts. When partner bid freely over 2S I had slam interest. If you think about it, partner won’t have any points in spades; hasn’t more than 7 in clubs so must have points outside. My singleton diamond was a great asset so I checked to make sure that we weren’t missing 2 aces and the rest is happy history.

@tina In fact your check for Aces was a bit reckless. Blackwood is very dangerous when your suit is a minor. Suppose you had got a 5D response. You cannot stop at 5NT without an intermediate bid, which I’ll bet the computers don’t recognize, and in fact while at 5NT you have 10 tricks off the top (if you get the probable Spade lead), you would be hard-pressed to find an 11th. So you are now stuck at 6C off two Aces, and a game plus score has become a minus. Cue bidding is the solution, but the computers don’t recognize it. On my first attempt I reasoned as you did on the first bidding round (i.e., takeout double), then tried a 3S bid to show a stopper for NT – and the computer passed, leaving me in a 5-card trump suit that belonged to the opponents! So I went back to replay immediately and just called 3NT, figuring as you did that if the computer didn’t like Hearts it must have something in Diamonds. Made 4NT.

@janemart .. Tinas X was a NEGATIVE double, not to confused with a takeout double.A negative double is bid where opps overcal your P. Their S overcall followed b your NEGATIVE x shows 4 cards in the other major ie 4 hearts. t the one level the NEGATIVE x is showing 6 points.Hope this clarifies. ijohn

@janemart Further comment – when the bid suits are both minors, the negative X shows both majors. When one bid suit is a major, the X shows the other major and either the other unbid suit or support for partner you can fall back on. Here S has support.

After 1 club and 1 spade, I was sneaking in a 3NT, kind of trying to steal a game, betting on a spade open lead. When partner bid freely to 5c, i knew we have strong hand, strong club fit and highly even hands. With my diamond singleton handy, I bid to 6c. The play was easy.

Hi @dianeg, I know what you mean, but the scoring is cleverer than that. When you play a hand a second and even third time, it shows the level at which your play finished, but it doesn’t register it, either in your daily scoresheet, or in the ‘All Scores’ section. I’ve tried it with a hand where there was only one top player, replayed in his contract, and it didn’t add to the number of people with that score. So, I’m afraid those guys did find 6C first time of asking. Not me though….

My partner opened in 1c, next player 1s. Although I had 3 good spades, wasn’t sure I could set opponent at the 1 level so didn’t double him. Had no 4 card suit other than hearts without a f card. Knowing partner had at least 3clubs, hopefully with a f card, I raised him with my 5 card club suit, mentioning my hearts at a 3 bid, letting partner make the final decision as to where we should be. Could have made six but was ok with that.
