Player Positions in the Auction

-
Play

Each player at the table has different roles based on who made the first bid. Opener, overcaller, responder and advancer are the names for each position. Opener is the one who makes the first bid, and responder is his/her partner. Overcaller is the first defender to bid and advancer is his/her partner. Also, some thoughts about seat positions and light openings.

I really enjoyed the video, as Graeme explains the contract really well.

  13. Great video lesson Graeme – many thanks. We crawled up to 4H but going straight for it in third position makes good sense. With only two light hearts, North could have left the bidding at 3H

@biggboy, you should learn a bit about the scoring in bridge. You get exactly the same points making 11 tricks in 4H as 11 tricks in 5H, but of course you lose the contract if you bid 5h but only take 10 tricks. There is no point in bidding straight to 5H here.

wadkin37 Thanks for the table position explanation. @ Graeme I felt my hand was too strong to preempt so I opened with one heart.
Your point about partner’s strength, was well taken. I’ve nothing to lose by an opening bid of 4H. (You must have had an arduous
evening of Bridge previous to making your video) Just kidding! I find all of the videos very informative and hope to catalogue them

Understand all that but please explain the significance of partner being a “past hand ”
Is it just being aware that partner will have less than 12 pts and that they may still bid and even introduce a different suit ?

@graeme In third seat you opened 4H. As I understand it a 4 level open is a preemptive bid showing an eight card suit with 6-9 (5-10) points. When opponents realise that they have been deceived ie opener was strong not weak, are they entitled to call the Director and what is the director likely to rule?
