Wishing I’d bid something on the first round but I guess they would have always found their spade fit. 3S making 3 was a good result for East and West, though, and not so good for me.

My response bid means 5-7 points, no strong suit. Partner takes to 4 H. Making 10 is easy. Opp. take 2 spades. D lead to king. Lead low heart to East king. Club lead takes west Q in dummy. H ace takes queen. Hearts and clubs take the rest. D ace is unplayed.

wadkin37 @graeme How does one best play the H suit? There are 5 trump out and they likely to split 3-2. One is on the board after winning the singleton K D? Please advise.

You’ll almost always lose two tricks with that holding unless defence mess up, @sbc49506742. There are a couple of legitimate chances I can think of off the top of my head for only one loser. You could hope that East has KT or QT doubleton. You play low towards the J. I East rises with the honour you cross to dummy next time and play the Jack. If East plays the T on the first trick West will play an honour and then East’s honour will drop next time.
Or you could hope that East has TX and West has KQX. You start by playing the 9 from the North hand. If East plays low you’ll lose to an honour in the West hand. Later, you cross to the South hand and play the J, smothering the T.
Maybe there are other chances. Try laying some cards out and trying a few things. Or use some pen and paper and scribble out the combinations. It’s quite hard at first but it gets your brain thinking and visualising so it’s good practice whether or not you figure it out.

      • wadkin37 says:

Thank you, Graeme. I’ll try to work out some combinations. For some reason, I continually misplay in this type of situation. Also, I’ll check to see if Mr. Watson has something to say about this.

  15. Got very lucky, 4H isn’t really there, led first towards JH, and east played KH right away, then east misdefended by discarding clubs on north’s hearts.

    • you loose the first 2 spades and win the diamond continuation with the king. Play the ace of trumps (west plays the ten ) followed by a low one to the jack (K and Q Fall). Ruff spade return. On running trumps, discard diamonds ,east discards 2 clubs Play clubs from the top 10 tricks

    VARIATIONS

Often an apparent non-consequential variation in our play affects how EW plays, and accounts for different scores. Variations in bidding, as we know, can also affect it. Possibly differences in our set-up choices can also affect it (I see that @kennecter and @cardplayer181 had different experiences with the same bidding.)

In this hand — in my set-up and bidding — a variation in the order of heart play affects whether I get 9 or 10 tricks.

    — If I play a low heart first upon gaining the lead with the DK, I make 9 because East plays a club after winning with the HK. I couldn’t get back to the DA and East held on to her CT to take the last trick.
    — If I take the HA first, I make 10 because now when East gets the lead with the HK, she plays a second diamond (taken by the DA).
