In rebidding their diamonds partner denied having 4 hearts, spades or clubs and also can’t have a balanced hand. This means they must have at least 6 diamonds in their hand.

NT is possibly a good spot for us since we obviously (unless partner happens to have 7 diamonds) don’t have a suit fit. If I bid 2NT though I’ll be showing 10-12 points and potentially get us into trouble so elected to play it safe, pass and let partner play in diamonds.

Seeing the large number of people going light in 3NT it looks like I might the right decision this time!

@graeme. Am I wrong with this one, I’m one of very few that played it in hearts. However partner opened in a minor and I showed one of my four card majors. However, the hint suggested I show the hearts but logic said show the higher ranked suit first show I could show the lower one next bid. Any norms or conventions around this?

Hi @player4, With two four cards suits as responder you’re normally better off showing the lower one. If you bid 1H and partner has hearts he’ll support you. If he doesn’t have hearts he can bid 1S. If he doesn’t support hearts and doesn’t bid 1S then you know you don’t have a fit in either major. 2H worked out ok for you this time but in the long run it might not be the best. I can see what you were thinking, though, and just thinking it through like you did is really great. Just add that bit of fine tuning and you’ll be in business. Once you get the hang of the concept you’ll see how it works in many different situations, not just this one.

    • janemart says:

You were obviously right on this occasion @player4! And I agree with your logic. If partner had preferred spades he could have bid them without raising the stakes.
Sky play that you should bid the lower of two 4 card suits, so if you bid 1S and then 2D, partner knows you have 5 spades. Huh. It’s an argument I suppose, but how often does that happen compared to having two 4 card suits?
@graeme may put me right on this one, but I suspect he’ll tell us to bid what we’re comfortable with. A little bit of fibbing to North does no harm. And fibbing to E/W can only do good.

@player4, please don’t ignore @janemart‘s message. It’s best to read and write and form our own conclusions. Please, everybody, keep chipping into the conversation and sharing your thoughts. It’s how we all learn. I’m wrong about plenty of stuff and change my mind all the time. Read, write, learn. Play. 🙂
