The spade suit looked good enough to insist on as trumps so there was no problem getting to game but it wasn’t a great game. Luckily West had the DA. I could have finessed the CJ, too, if I’d needed to but by then I had established the diamond suit… Watch

It’s hard to make 5 in a minor even with a fit. Didn’t think we had 29 points. Hoped partner had 2 spades when I rebid my 6 card spade suit. So relieved to see dummy and to make the 4 spade contract,

I bid it a little differently — but still ended up in the spade contract. I had to play it a couple of times — but when I did it right I made 4 spades. If opponents lead the clubs, it is easier. Otherwise, it requires finesse against both the Ace of Diamonds and Jack of Clubs. Fortunately, both are in the west hand!

GRAEME….. Can I suggest that you post the solution to the daily hands, either the best of the members or the OFFICIAL way to play it. This way those members who got lowers scores will be able to study the correct way to play and will ultimately improve their bidding and playing skills. The solution could be posted at the end of the day, so players can try again after studying the solution.

      Hi @ijohn,
Thanks so much for the suggestion. It sure would be good to have some sort of analysis at the end of every hand. I just wish there were a few more hours in the day to get everything done! We are looking into ways of analysing all the results but that’s a longer term project. There’s no way I can write good enough code to make meaningful automatic analysis on a hand by hand basis and for me or someone else to study every hand just isn’t practical now.
But I’m not dismissing the idea at all! I really do think it’s a good idea, we just need to find a way to make it work given our limited resources.

    4S, made
    Opening lead West: H3

It has taken me virtually all afternoon to understand this hand. The key, of course, was not to lose anything but the 3 aces. That, I did see at the time. But only now do I see clearly that the reason it was so nerve-wracking was the fact that both our clubs and diamonds had one additional missing honor, the Club Jack and the Diamond Queen.

I now see, too, that I led both of the “second tier” cards, the Club Ten and the Diamond Jack, to try to drive out the Aces. It worked, but I don’t think I did it quite consciously, and I definitely didn’t ask myself where the aces needed to be for those plays to succeed. The CT and DJ were where they were — the CT in North and the DJ in South — so I led them.

After looking at what I did, I re-read Graeme’s post and understood better what he did. It looks like his plan was to establish the diamond suit. I had been aware of the diamond length opportunity when the hand began, but I quickly forgot all about it.

Anyway, it is always fun when the fog clears and you can say, “Oh, that’s what I did!”

    CARD COMBINATIONS
I am thinking that maybe ferreting out a card combination discussion on these particular missing honor situations might help. The only card combinations I have any knowledge about are the missing Queen (having the A-K-J) and having the A-Q when opponents lead that suit. Both of these small amounts of knowledge are tremendously helpful, I find.
