Too Powerful to Pre-empt

-
Play

You may have heard that pre-empts are best made early, which is true. However, sometimes, your single-suited hand may be good enough to make a slam. So, why settle for game right off the bat? If partner has opened and you’re strong enough, make a forcing bid first to see partner’s rebid. Only then do you have enough information to place the contract.

Happy to have the same bidding, @Tina. Made 11 tricks – those who made 12 must have been lucky opponents didn’t take their 2 Aces. I’m not jealous!

I had a diamond lead, heart return to the ace, second heart. I put up the king which E ruffed. I ruffed the second diamond, but now needed the club finesse. What is the best line of play from here? Or should I have ducked the KH at trick 3? As it happened, I ran the trumps and E discarded the club king!

I think if I was East I’d have called 4D then hopefully partner would have gone to 5 which will make. Did anyone play it from East and bid this or did South overcall 4S and North go to 5S?

  6. ah, disaster, somehow their defense against me was much better than the defense in the video:

after diamond lead and AH, west led another heart, I jumped in with the king, but east unexpectedly ruffed it. He continued diamonds, which I ruffed with dummy, but now, because I was stolen a heart trick, I need two club tricks, in order to get to 10 tricks. So, after drawing all the trumps, I tried the club finesse, losing to the king, and they make another heart. Two down.

Hi @kaderschaufel! And me!! When I watched the vid, I wondered why on earth W would not return a H. E’s 8H HAS to be a singleton, and with W holding 6 and seeing 3 in dummy, it doesn’t take a massive leap of faith!! So, like you, I took the failing finesse for 2 down. It seems that something about our bidding caused the effective defence to kick in. I’m going to count it as a 65% hand, despite it showing as 17%….

@stevewehrle for about a week I have been watching the results closely of some of the people on my play list. I know it should be swings and roundabouts but I am convinced that people playing strong no trumps have gone through a period of getting superior results through opposition play as well as the conytracts. Keep an eye on it for a week or so and see if you concur.
On this hand the 8 of hearts looked very suspicious, it was either top of nothing, a singleton, or low fron 8, 10, 20. Given only one could hurt me and even then I was destined to lose a heart, I ducked the return spade low.

I botched play, but also get hurt by hearts. West led a diamond, which was won with the A, and east returned a heart, which was Won with Ace. West led back a heart. I put up King which was trumped. Ouch. In an effort to make the remaining tricks, I tried finessing the K of clubs. Turned out it was a singleton. Double ouch!
