A Puzzling Pre-empt

-
Play

Tired of scientific, precise bidding? How about a pre-empt? Pre-empts are effective because they limit bidding space and available information. Opponents will often have no clue whether to pass, double, or bid something. Take a look at this puzzling pre-empt by East and see how @Tina and @Bajir deal with it.

@janemart Not alone on the overall ladder (and never alone in spirit 🙂 Looks like 2 other folks also had the same result as you, which must have been 11% of the players who had played the hand at the time. Your % refers to the % of players who you’ve either scored the same or better than. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the video. I went 4 Spades and went down, too. Took East for a weak pre-empt. Thinking that I should have also have thought they might go down in Hearts. But I thought if they were really weak, I perhaps could make 4 Spades for a better result.

By my rules, a pre empt needs 7 of the suit and is light on points. Opening points from partner and shown hand should give 4S a chance.

Before I get railroaded into bidding too high I count the tricks. I have 6 spades, might make 5, no hearts, 2 clubs and 2 diamonds, that is 10 but I could see problem. If West has only 2 hearts he will get a ruff. Now if I am missing a minor suit ace I will be down 1. What is East’s prospect in 4 hearts. Not great I have a sure heart winner maybe 2 spades and partner has opening points. So double and take the penalties. If partner is very distributional he can bid again but unlikely.
When I see the 4 hands I think East is far too strong for a 4 level preempt. Give West my hand and he is close to a slam. Do not make a preempt before partner has limited his hand unless you are weak in points and long in trumps. 6 trumps and 17 points is a double not a jump to 4 hearts!

I do not have a problem with east’s bidding. 4H puts you as south under maximum pressure. After north opens 1C, east realises that slam their way is very unlikely, so the preempt at the game level is good to play as two-way, either a standard preempt, or a strong hand like the one shown. Most south players with that hand will bid 4S under pressure. But as it turns out that is the wrong bid, since it is going off when the opponent’s 4H was also going off. With the decent heart holding, passing 4H as south is reasonable. I do think south’s decision should be guided by the vulnerability, which isn’t shown, and the scoring method, which also wasn’t shown. For example vulnerable at teams 4S is clearly the right bid in my opinion. In the play, south can make 4S if they play for trumps 3-3 and DK, D10 with west. But after east is shown to have only six hearts, it looks like they did start with the strong hand, so that line of play has little chance of success and will lead to two off here. Tina did well to make nine tricks, by not adopting that line.
