Why Did Partner Jump to Slam After My Rebid?

A reverse bid is when openers second bid will force partner to the 3 level. So you need to be strong.16+ right? And on this hand we only have 15 and the shape isn’t great.

But Tina just feels like making that reverse bid anyway. Then her partner jumps straight to slam. Aargh!!

Watch the video to see if Tina’s intuition pays off.

Video is not working, but I am presuming so many people got into slam via a reverse 2s bid which excited computer greatly. Or does conventional standard american bidding get you there @tina? Certainly, in acol world i think a 1 nt rebid is most conventional and partner rightly passes it.

And thanks for the lead west! And covering my sucker qd lead.

I’m also interested to know why (playing Acol) a second round bid of 2 spades gets the computer excited enough to jump directly to 6NT. As it happens I made 7 as both the diamond and heart finesses work but I’m still interested to know.
All I (and I assume many others) are doing is showing a second suit since partner doesn’t like my suit and I don’t like his/hers. I’m not showing excessive strength, but enough to show a second 4 card suit.

It is a great question @jeffs – be sure to check out the video we did for this hand. And read @chance22 ‘s fantastic comment below about transfers. I ALWAYS forget about them and usually end up in a big mess. It’s nice when you end up in a hand where one’s accidental transfer actually leads to a good result! 🙂

A little research about reverses (from another person trying to learn):

    1. On the Sky BC page on reverses are a couple of videos with Tina and Bajir.

    2. Simplest definition I found (from Wikipedia): “William S. Root [defines it] as ‘…a nonjump bid at the two-level in a new suit that ranks higher than the suit you bid first’ ”

    3. I searched to try to find the REASON for it, or the logic behind it. In other words, what about this situation would make it suitable for showing extra points (and worth giving up your simple ability to show your second suit)? Without spending all day on it, I found only one explanation, again from Wikipedia. The example was 1C – 1S; 2H: “Note responder avoided making an initial response of 1H. Despite this, opener chose to bid 2H, apparently seeking a fit that is unlikely to exist. This seemingly odd bidding is the ‘reverse’ of what one would expect with a minimum hand (keeping the bidding low) and is used only with strong hands as it consumes bidding space.” Not great, but helpful. I am still not sure why it is worth it, but….

    4. A story about it from “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Bridge” by H. Anthony Medley, p. 142. This stuck with me and I was able to find it by searching for “reverse bridge ‘looked at me'”

“Many rubber bridge players don’t know the concept of the reverse. Just to give you an example, when I started playing bridge again several years after graduating from college, I met a law school classmate of mine, Wall Street attorney Peter Kalat, in Pasadena to play in a regional tournament. Peter had been playing since law school and was a very good, experienced player.

“We sat down at one table and the bidding proceeded. I was Dummy and when I laid my hand down I noticed that all three players looked at me quizzically. After the hand Peter asked me, ‘Do you know who those two guys were?’ I said no. He said, ‘Alfred Sheinwold and Frank Stewart, two of the best players in the world.’

“Then he said, ‘You reversed.’ It was like he was speaking Martian, but the tone in his voice told me I had done something wrong. I had no idea what he was talking about.

“Peter explained what a reverse was, and then gave me an article on reverses that explained them in more detail. But the reason they all looked at me so funny when I put my hand down as Dummy was that, by reversing, I had promised at least 17 points and I only had 13 points.

“At this point I had been playing rubber bridge several times a week for a couple of years and nobody with whom I had been playing would have recognized a reverse if it slapped them in the face. However, playing reverses is very good bidding procedure, and you should learn them and be aware of them. Try to avoid reversing unless you have the proper hand. You will be a better player for it.”

MVP award for @chance22 ! This story is so fantastic – could you imagine the horror!! Ahhhh!!!

        @bajir

Thanks so much for going to the trouble to respond. Positive feedback is very nice to get. I remembered that story from a library book, and was glad I could find the passage online.

As this point in the learning process, I think I enjoy posting more than playing, as I am still trying to get comfortable with a framework for looking at a hand. It is funny how slow the process is: in that story, the three other players immediately calculated the value of dummy’s hand – something I have never yet done. I will have to add it to the list.

By the way, I never responded to your suggestion of doing a video. That would be far, far in the future, if ever, as I am still in struggling mode. But I have seen one with @Ron1945, so I see it is something that you do, and it is a very nice idea. I hope to see more of them.

        Best wishes.

        P.S. Baseball!
