@graeme I’m getting depressed here. I played this twice as South a bit differently, and both times N messed up the defence and EW made (once N chucked both small cards under the KH, and once he got the lead with KH and failed to run his 2 winning clubs). To make sure I’m not going mad, I played it again as N and, sure enough, got EW off.

This seems to happen quite a bit. Is it my fault? Or does N just not like me? Judging by the results, he doesn’t seem to do it to most other people.

North is far from perfect, @triciacallow , just like all us Souths and its nobody’s fault because bridge is a hard game. The cold hard facts are that North will make defensive mistakes on just about every hand and so will you! And so will I! There’s nothing you can do about North’s mistakes, that’s my job. Your job is to cut down on your own mistakes. I know it sounds harsh but it’s the same for all of us. There’s rarely a hand goes by that I don’t look back on and think I could have done something better. Just keep plugging away, learning and enjoying.

A very good player once said that the difference between a beginner and a world champion is that the beginner makes 5 mistakes per hand. A world champion only makes 3 mistakes per hand.

I should have doubled. 2NT is impossible to play with a very weak dummy. So often, you can’t get to dummy to lead towards the honours in your hand.

Someone got a better thinking p[artner than I did. thought processshould go something like this. opening lead QC, dummy has 4, S shows a single small. this leaves 2 clubs unaccounted for. A & K. therefore when West doesn’t play them both on the first trick it is a strong indication that North should lead a small one after south gets in with a spade and leads him a heart.. Wish I could think that good when i’m on the hot seat.
