The Pre-emptive Raise | ♠AQ ♥T74 ♦AKJ62 ♣T75

The Pre-emptive Raise

A pre-empt is an opening bid or overcall made with a long trump suit and few points. Preempts are great! They make it tough for the opponents and you have the safety of all those trumps.

Let’s take that idea and see if we can use it elsewhere.

If your opponents open the bidding, specially if both opponents are bidding, then the chances of your side making game are slim and you’re seldom going to want to invite partner to game.

So what does a jump raise of an overcall show? Not much point inviting to game if everyone is bidding so why not use jump raises of overcalls as pre-emptive raises?

Good trumps, maybe not such a good hand. Yeah!

  1. Oh, gosh – things don’t break in my favor @graeme. Why did partner bid 3?

@graeme. I like preempts too, Graeme. In this case I made a perhaps rash call of 3D – probably your 1D over-call is better than my double, but I nearly always double if I have an opening hand! Anyway, I did make 8 tricks because East failed to take her 3 heart tricks and led to my good Jspade instead (hoping partner had another trump, I guess!

Interesting how many people thought N was mad to bid 3 D, echoing what happens at my club when I make a sacrificial bid to “stop” my opponents finding and making 4s say. For some reason it is thought dirty tactics, but the scoring system in duplicate encourages it, especially when not vulnerable and unlikely to be doubled for -50 to -150 , although here it was better to defend.

  31. tomunc says:

@Graeme, In playing 5 card Majors, my 1D bid could have been made with as little as a 3 card suit. After passing, when N jump bids the Diamonds it had to be preemptive, attempting to keep EW from finding a Major fit…IMO the only logical conclusion. Once the Diamonds showed a 4-0 split the contract was sunk. As it stands, being non-vul, not a bad score…not a good score.

    • graeme says:

      Hi @tomunc,
1D can be a three card suit if it’s the opening bid but as an overcall it’s always five. Show me a hand on which you want to overcall a 3 card diamond suit and I’ll show you a better option. 🙂

      • tomunc says:

        Graeme,

Good point on the overcall. I should just focus on a single thing when re-studying Bridge. I had actually already forgotten that it was an overcall bid. I may be too old to ever get back to the level I once was at, having not played competitively in about 20 years now…but I am willing to try. However, I will need to focus better. The last 7-8 years of playing competitively, I had switched to 2/1 GF, but the system isn’t the issue. It appears to be focus.

        Thanks for the wake-up. 🙂

  36. With an opening hnad, S is justified – in my school – in calling 2D. I’m not too sure about the N support to three – of course, even 2D goes down if E plays correctly – but it is a reasonable N sacrifice . After all, E-W could make a positive score in either H or S. Let’s face it, N has denied an opening hand, so are N-S really going anywhere?

BTW, Graeme, can you tab the “WNES”? (and the bids!), as I find it confusing, especially when “X” is thrown in, to be certain who bid what?

  37. davstevens says:

After partner’s preemptive raise the opponents backed off and I played it at 3D, down 2 because the opponents misplayed (it could have been down 3). With at least 9 trumps between us 3D is a good bid by partner, even though in this case there was a 4-0 split with the Q offsides (a very small likelihood). If the opponents had doubled it would have been worse, but it is hard to make a penalty double at such a low level. Although perhaps 10% of the players did better (and I have no idea how) I am pleased with my result. The opponents are cold for 4S, losing only 2 spades and (maybe) one club, and even 4H makes due to the 3-3 split. Even if they only make 2S we come out ahead, losing 100 instead of losing 110.

I thought to preempt you had to have at least 7 of a suit, which throws off all your concept. I know having 9 trumps between us is nice but I felt it was a very misleading bid. I stopped at 3 D and of course, we went down 3! – some players only went down 2 but nevertheless, this was not a preemptive hand in my opinion. To respond to a preemptive bid, I was told you had to have an opening bid in your hand, or at least two Aces.
