What Are Your Slam Bidding Tools?

What a hand! Beautiful strength. Beautiful shape. It will take you just a glance to wonder if you should take this one to slam.

It’s not normally a good idea to bid a slam missing two aces. But it’s not such a great idea bidding a slam when you have enough aces but not enough other good cards.

When you’re thinking of bidding a slam it’s important to consider what information you need from partner. It can be tempting to launch into ace asking immediately but it’s often not going to help.

A raise of partner’s suit to the 5 level can be a surprisingly simple and effective way of inviting to slam. It’s the same principle as inviting to game only you’re up a bit higher!

A question re: 2 Club opener: South holds 19 HCP, and a 2 Club opener “requires” 20+ with an unbalanced hand. So, it appears that you are using distribution in your initial hand assessment. There is a school of thought from my reading that says you don’t count distribution points until later in the auction. So, are you explicitly taking distribution points into account in your initial assessment, or are you applying some judgment to what is obviously a beautiful hand?

I don’t see a 2C opener here with not enough HCP. I opened 1S. Can you tell me why you chose 2C?

I decided not to open 2 because I thought the chances of 1 being passed out were slim.
I couldn’t see the point in going slowly once we had found a spade fit. No point in asking for aces as I am not interested in the diamond ace.

As I open with a strong 2 partner supporting spades suggested that I would need to be able to make 6 largely on my own. As I am holding controls in Diamonds, Hearts and Spades I felt that given partner’s support I 6 spades was doable. By not asking for aces I missed out on the possibility of a grand slam but partner would have had to had 2 aces for me to bid a grand slam.

      Hi @dlash,
The void has potential, for sure, but it’s not till later in the auction whether you know how useful it will be. I could have gone either way on the hand. I figured if I opened 1S half the players would ask why I didn’t open 2C. I even tend to be conservative with my 2C openings so it was a little out of character for me. Honestly I don’t have a strong opinion about it.

@lynng I had to chuckle when I saw that you and both ended up in slam limbo on this hand. I usually think that people are awfully tough on North but for this hand come on??? North knows that we have slam pts and a super fit with 2 high honors. I’m not taking responsibility for missing this slam knowing we are missing 2 aces and not knowing what partner is looking at.

I don’t think so, @drroflstomp. By asking for aces you’re telling North you care about how many aces he has. He says he has none and you say, well, in that case we better not bid slam.

Suppose North imagines you have 23 points, or even 25. North has 7. That’s 32. North presumes that despite all those points you’re missing two aces. Otherwise you wouldn’t have asked and then signed off.

The thing is on this hand that you don’t care how many aces North has. The fact that you’re missing two aces shouldn’t bother you. You have a void in diamonds that you know about but North doesn’t. That’s why I suggested a 5S bid in the video to get the information you really want.

Hope that makes some sense and happy to hear any further thoughts.

      • Profile photo of drroflstomp drroflstomp says:

@Graeme, There were two ways that this slam bid was going to happen for me: (1) either I was going to get a decent chance of partner holding the club A or partner held better than minimum spades (of which KQxx certainly counts!) I really am struggling to understand why you are saying we don’t care about A’s when you have no idea that partner holds the KQxx of spades. If north did not have that K or Q of spades I think you would be singing a different tune about missing that AC 🙂

I do understand your point about asking and signing off — once I started Blackwood we weren’t making it to slam, but perhaps the best bid for me was not to be in slam. Just because it was there, doesn’t necessarily mean it should have been bid. Substitute North having the KD instead of the KS (same points same distribution even) this is a different conversation.

Thanks for the comments though, always appreciate your thoughts and the website in general!

        • Profile photo of graeme graeme says:

Yes, @drroflstomp, those spades are pretty good. These hands are all randomly dealt but I did chuckle to myself as we were doing the video. Partner had exactly the cards you needed him to have, right down to the JC and even the JH. Looks like I rigged it to make a point, but truly I didn’t.

The problem with asking for Aces is that if North shows one Ace you don’t know if it’s the useful AC or the useless AD. And if partner shows no aces you still don’t know if he’s got the useful JC or the useful spades. So I really don’t think asking for Aces does any good.

But I do take your point that North has good cards that he hasn’t told you about.

In a funny sort of way it would be more meaningful to consider how North should bid if we didn’t know what the South cards were. It’s all too easy to make a case looking at all four hands and I know that’s what I’m doing now and I shouldn’t!

Oh, well, let’s remember to look out for similar situations to compare and see what we can all learn.

Thanks, as always, for your input @drroflstomp.

A borderline 2C opening just a hair shy in terms of suit solidity and HCP. My rule of thumb is is to count my quick tricks and losers; if the former outnumber the latter, I’ll go for the 2C. Here the balance is about 4 of each, so I went for the more conservative opening. I have several slam methods over competition, but I don’t know which, if any, the computers play, and when it comes to direct ace asking I prefer Roman Key Card Blackwood, which I know the computers don’t play. So I bit down hard and when North showed an Ace – which one didn’t matter – I took the shot.

Bid Spades. Started with 1S and when partner responded with 2S, I showd him my Heart. He responded with 4S and looking at my hand I saw only 1 looser and bid S straight away and made 12 tricks. Didn’t bother to ask for Aces. Didn’t watch the video. Looking at Tina’s bidding, I think I should have done the same. But being a learner, I do hesitate.

  54. Having a solid H suit, I opened 1H to allow the option to reverse. However, when I did, partner (computer) passed 3S – why on earth? With that support, why did partner support hearts in the first place? What???

Firstly I am surprised at how much Psychic bidding is going on with this hand. The number of player who jump to 6 with out any information is crazy. I followed the 2c opener and got to 4S (now reading I now know that que bids are not recognised my the computer) I simply make an enquiry of my partner by bidding 5 hearts. The denies AC AD and as such shows AH and more honours. I let partner decide they bid 5S so that is where I stop…The way most bid this hand getting 6 you will go down as often as you make which is not good…

Bid 5S first time, made 6 but could only count on 6-9 pts from partner. How could I bid 6? Told me no aces when I not 4NT, how could I bid slam?
Bid 6S second time, still made 6. How could I bid slam?

The bidding went 1spade, 2 d’s, 2 spades,3 d’s and then I asked for aces with 4 clubs, partner bid 4 spades and bid 6 spades. I know now that partner did not have two Aces for the response over 4 clubs. I made 12 tricks but the bidding was not correct. When do you use 4 clubs to ask for Aces and when do you use 4 NT’s? Partner obviously did not think I was asking for Aces.
