How to Respond When East Overcalls Your Best Suit?

You have enough strength to respond, but what should you do when when East overcalls your best suit?

Realised tonight, after fishing all day and half bottle of red, that Graeme’s Reading of the hands and card counting is definitely superior to my present state. Failed to make 3NT until I watched the video, twice, whereupon 11 tricks drop out, purely logically, no luck, no finesse.

The only good news is that I understand his logic in hindsight.

Let’s see. Fishing, red wine, a bit of bridge. Seems like it’s all good news, @johna.

      • Profile photo of johna johna says:

Thanks for your comment. Yes but I wish my Bridge was better. I’ve read the books by the world best and Australian best, my background is probability theory and investment, and I overlay with an intuitive instinct (sort of psychic analysis of analysing based on how I know people bid and play). I do need to improve my visualisation of the hands at the start, and your videos are helping me in this growth. I’m suddenly remembering all sorts of eight digit numbers like credit cards and driving licences that I never did before and I attribute this to daily Bridge play. I now get top board most days on your system but usually only at the second attempt once I know what contract to be in.

I’ve only been playing since August 2016, and I lack a regular partner so it’s hard to progress to the sort of bidding sophistication needed to bid and make slams, or know when to stick short of game.

Anyway, your daily dose of hands and the videos is definitely helping my game, notwithstanding the regular sub-optimal computer leads.

        • Profile photo of graeme graeme says:

Just keep playing, @johna. At the moment the best thing you can do is get lots of hands under your belt and forget all the gadgets. The chances of ever getting the same hand are microscopically small but after a while some of them start to look the same. Somewhere between conscious recollection and some sort of unconscious connection to your memory banks you’ll start to know stuff and recognise situations. In time you have spare brain power to be thinking about other stuff.

Play the hands slowly and thoughtfully, thinking specially carefully about what the opening lead means about the distribution of that suit and what clues you can garner from the auction.

Forget about your results and just practice focus. I used to practice by finishing every hand and then writing down all four hands before looking at the opposition cards. Or, harder but better, imagining the cards in your head. Trying to recollect the full hands will do much more good than looking at the score sheet.

Just some ideas for you, I’m sure you’ll figure out your own learning path.

          • Profile photo of johna johna says:

Really appreciate the advice. Will practice your visualisation techniques. I can “see” words and numbers in my minds eye and I’m sure regular play will improve my visualisation further. My goal is to see all 4 hands before looking. Will practice that.

North is nowhere close to reopening with a jump bid of 3H opposite a passing partner. Playing negative doubles, it is routine to reopen with a double which would be passed by South for penalties. West might run to 2S which also can be doubled and defeated at least 2 tricks. If West leads a spade against 3NT, then 3NT will be defeated by accurate defense.

  31. Profile photo of verona verona says:

@graeme. It was a very tricky hand. It is just as well Bajir was there to ask the telling questions about the bidding and also the play. I have never come across a negative double so the lesson was very helpful. Once South passed the bidding was “easy” I chose the 3NT over the 4H as it was unclear how many Hs North held and I wasn’t very impressed with the holding when they went down. With the play I would have had trouble with the Spades as I wanted to make the K. My other problem was the DQ. It was our good fortune to see that E only had 2Ds thus we made the J. I could not have worked that out. Playing the Hearts out was the answer.

I noticed somewhere that you raised my status Graeme! May I ask from what to where?

Many thanks for your patience as I would not have come across the resolution of some of the “common mistakes” that Tina, Bajir and yourself have helped us with had I not done the Summer School. Cheers. Verona @verona

Loved the video, as usual, but I still went down one after bidding 3 NT! I went back in, again, and made 3 NT…I had to slow way down to do it! I remembered that 7 C play which to me was genius (thanks Graeme)! In North’s shoes, I would never have jumped to 3 H, especially after South passed! Ah well, no guts, no glory! 🙂 What fun!
