  14. Hi @megs, I opened 2 nt. This has been a standard opening bid as far as I know, holding 20-22pts & roughly a balanced hand. This tells ptn straight off my strength. If he wants to know if I have a 4 card major he’ll bid 3 clubs. If I have hearts or spades I’ll bid them, or bid 3 nt if not. Best to ask @graeme though to confirm. We made 11 on this hand.

Had to play the 4 heart bid twice to be able to get 11 tricks – for those of you who made 11 the first time playing – was there a way to know how to play the cards to be able to make that extra trick? I had to stop in the middle of play and think about the spades before moving on – and getting rid of the 2 spades in my hand was the key for the overtrick. Just wonder how to better “see” these types of ideas.

Made 11 tricks after a diamond lead taken in dummy. Lead the QH for a heart finesse which failed, but the 9H provided an entry in dummy to take the AC. No way to avoid the spade loser, so made 11 tricks.
The only way i could think of to make 12 tricks was to lead towards the QH hoping that West would play low. I tried this but West put up the King, so still only made 11.

    Hi @megs
I agree with you. I don’t like 2NT as an opening bid. The hand is not balanced and I don’t like the doubleton honours in spades. I actually opened at the 1- level as I figured I didn’t want to be in game unless partner had some strength. The spades might not be worth three points – and in fact weren’t.

Opened 2NT to show points despite two doubletons so pleased to see Joan did the same, as I am a product of her training videos plus some Marty Bergen.
However I leapt into the play without first mentally confirming my re-entry points so only made 10 tricks, which I rectified by playing again to make 11. A careless error.
I see 5 people managed to bid and make 6NT. I’m not going to try and match that, as a bid of 6NT should invite W to play the AS after winning the KH.

12 tricks should never be made – 2 top losers in Spades and the losing Heart finesse if played in Hearts; if in NT, proper Spade play leads to 3 tricks, plus the same losing finesse. Either way, N-S are held to their contract.

How a defender plays this hand, though, depends on whether you are playing a form of duplicate or rubber. If the latter, defenders go all out to beat the hand, which is what allowed me to make 5 – after taking the Heart K, West cashed the Spade A, then – seeing no obvious choice for more tricks – led a club. This gave me a free finesse and a discard for my remaining Spade loser. But a good human West would have realized that after cashing the A, the only Spades he could not see were the K and Q, and he should continue Spades rather than break the Clubs. If I either was void or had the K, his play would give me nothing I wasn’t entitled to. If I had both cards, his partner would ruff, and if partner had the K, he would win it. So a Spade continuation either wins another trick or makes no difference. The Club lead either loses or makes no difference.

At duplicate it is an undoubted mistake. The 4H contract is standard; allowing an overtrick to S would give E-W a bottom. If N-S are in 3NT the choice is even clearer; E-W will beat those who had to defend against 4H (assuming they play Spades properly and get their 4 tricks).

I started the bidding process as usual, rather unhappy, seeing many difficulties, not knowing what to do.

    — Then I said, “I keep trying to get it right, or best. Instead, maybe just do something reasonable.”

    — Then I remembered an interview I just heard with @joanbutts where she said, re creativity in bridge, “Never deny yourself the intuition that you feel about something.”

All right! Full speed ahead with something within reason that feels right. I bid 1NT, even though a couple of points too many and a bit unbalanced.

Partner’s 2S meant 0-7, 5+ spades. I know that partner is supposed to make the decision after a 1NT bid, but of course my hand was a bit off, so now I knew more about our hands than he did. I figured he didn’t have the SA and SK (boy, was that right!) as that would be 7 points right there.

So I went to game in NT.

Made 11 with a D4 lead from West.

    OK.
