Stoppers for notrumps

Yes, Qxx is most definitely a stopper when right hand opponent bids the suit. OK, let’s say probably, but that’s normally enough, right?

Started off with the simple raise in diamonds over East’s overcall and then tried 2NT and 3NT but North insisted on diamonds. Ruffed the three “low” spades to make 400.

@joanbutts Sometimes the wrong bid is the right bid. First time I played it I stuck to the conventions and bid it as you did. I did toy with the idea of bidding 2 hearts over the 2 clubs but resisted the temptation. Second time around bid the hearts and now no difficulty getting agreement on a no trump contract. I am inclined to think that the 2 hearts is justified for 5 hearts headed by the ten suggests that you can make at least 2 heart tricks – 3nt is also much easier to make – in 5 diamonds guess the finesse wrong and you go down – in nt at least you live to fight another day!

  22. 5 Diamonds made easily . I play a one D opener, promises at least 4 D. It is a good way to bid because your partner always knows you have at least 4. I play opening 1 Club is looking for partner to bid his (at least 4) card major.
I play duplicate and this system is used by most.
Don’t use the “better minor rule.” The minor you bid ( 1 D or ! C ) needs to describe your hand better then making your partner guess..

There is no need to finesse in order to make 5 diamonds. You over-ruff West on the third club led. You then play the Ace of spades, ruff the Queen of spades, get back to North’s hand by playing to the Ace of hearts, then cross-ruff spades and hearts.

    5D, 10 tricks
    E led CA

It took me quite a while to understand this hand. About 800 other people in 5D also made only 10. This post got a bit more complex than I anticipated, so I hope there are not errors. Sorry it is so long.

It appears that there were two successful paths
    1. Gamble on the spade finesse, 50%, which worked
    2. Start ruffing the losing spades and hearts BEFORE DRAWING THAT FINAL TRUMP

The unsuccessful path, the one I took – and maybe many others – was to draw that final diamond and THEN try ruffing the spades and hearts.

It is probably worth figuring out WHY we took this path. I vaguely remember seeing that there would be too few diamonds, but never really considered leaving a trump out there – because it makes me nervous LOL. I went at it with a hopeless feeling, thinking something might work out. (In fact it did almost work because the HT became good, but it was marooned in South. The not-good SQ had to be led from North. I struggled trying to find a way to make this work, but couldn’t.)

After a while, I finally read carefully what @joanbutts said about the ruffing-only solution, “Ruffed the three %u2018low’ spades to make 400.” THREE spades, not two. The only way that is possible is if you start when there are still three diamonds there in South.

So I went after THREE spade ruffs with single-minded focus. After playing it through a few times, thinking it was as big a gamble as the finesse, I realized that this method actually has a good chance of success.

    — We know the DJ is in West.
    — We know there are 7 hearts and 8 spades in EW.
    — Hearts: if we’ve kept the DQ in North we could over-ruff the DJ if West ran out of hearts.
    — Spades: West needs to have at least 3 of the 8: one for the SA-S4 trick, one for the D4 ruff, one for the D5 ruff. (The final spade ruff is the DK, which is safe.) So splits of 4-4, 5-3, or 3-5, about an 80% chance.

    PLAY:
Tricks 1-4. After the initial 3 club tricks, we would play D6 to see if the split was 2-1.

    No, 3-0.

So here is where we need to choose whether 1) to draw out the final trump and finesse or 2) go forward with the ruffing. We cannot really draw the final trump and THEN decide what path to take. I know I, for one, did not see this choice clearly at the time.

Trick 5. Play S4 to the ace.
Trick 6. Ruff ST with D4.
Trick 7. H2 to North%u2019s HA to get back North.
    Trick 8-11. Now some cross-ruffing, SJ-D5, H6-D7, SQ-DK, H7-D8.
Trick 12. Now finally play DQ to draw the last diamond and throw off H8.
Trick 13. Then the final trick with North%u2019s final diamond, D9-HT.

Sadly we are taught too often to draw all the trumps. About half the time it’s not the best idea, so try not to worry too much about this. You sure gave this one a lot of thought. That’s fantastic!

After many attempts at 5D kept falling one trick short; as that King of Spades (West) kept popping up at the end of game.Only way i finally succeeded is to not not draw in the 2 missing trumps and then cross trumped all the Spades on North side .It worked finally ! cheers normie sa
