You are third to bid, everyone has passed, but you don’t have an opening hand.

Should you make a preemptive 1 NT bid and put some pressure on West?

  • Should you open a suit or will that lead to headaches for your rebid?
  • Should you take the cautious route and just pass?
  • Tina provides some pointers for what to consider in this situation.
  • Watch the video to see if her decision paid off.

lisa19. I play standard. 5 card majors, 5 card majors,weAk twos . I opened on 11 called a diamond. Partner asked for a second suit. I called clubs. We played two clubs and got it. I get confused about all the different game play. I find it dificult to know what the computer is playing and can’t wrap my head around all theversions. Can you help. Love playing with you both.

Partner, be parsimonious with those pips! You decided to lead a trump, thats alright, but why the 10? I put up my king and a couple of tricks later your 8 lost to opponents 9, a missed trick! Perhaps I should have led a trump earlier.

Will now look at the video to see why opening light was a mistake, but i thought they were going to bid and might as well make them do it at the 2 level! I see under my system east west left unimpeded would have found their way to spades.

Good video – I left them to bid it out and they ended in 2S making 3. Tina’s idea was much better. If S opens 1NT, East leaves West in 1H even though she only has 1 heart. @Tina does East not bid her spades because she only has 9 points and feels like she can’t go to the 2 level?

Verona says: March 5, 2017 playing Standard.
My first bid was 2 clubs opening weak, which was immediately knocked off by their Spades. I then watched the video after looking at the results. I hesitated to open 1NT but I did. I bid 2NT over their 2 Hs and went down. 3rd time I opened 1C they bid Hs so I then bid 1NT, they bid 2Hs so I bid 3 clubs which I made because the lead came from W. I made 9. So what to do when I am faced with this situation in real life. Fortune favors the brave. Maybe opponents run scared once you open NTs. So think that is what I will do.

I remember the hand but forgot how I played it he first time. Haven’t looked at the video yet but my reasoning was that 1 club was a safe opening – if e/w passes it out then it would mean the points are evenly distributed and we will probably make 7 tricks. When partner supported clubs I could see that we would probably have 20 points between us. They clearly did not have a fit in the majors so 3 clubs was in all probability a good bid. 3 clubs made 10 tricks but we probably should have been a bit more courageous and bid 3nt – in both cases we would have needed to make 9 tricks and I can see quite few bid and made 3nt.

I play Standard. Whether to open light in third seat, presented a moment to pause and think.
Holding 11HCPs, I borrowed three points from partner. (because, he, sitting in 1st seat could be
holding 11 HCPs) In response to my opener he must remember to deduct three points from his hand.
When partner entered the neg. double (telling me he had four spades) I had a perfect rebid of two
clubs. This suited the confines of my hand
