Maybe you take this to slam, maybe you won’t.  What does your gut tell you to do?

It is really important to look at the opening lead and try and work out if the lead is from strength. If you then decide there is a problem with too many losers, look for the best solution available to you.

There are those who will tell you that a hunch is just your subconscious telling you something your conscious mind doesn’t know yet: but is trusting your gut always the way to go?

Follow along as Bajir and Tina play through this hand and put that theory to the test.

Haven’t looked at the video yet but that lead told me i had a problem. Hoped spades would break 3:3 to ditch clubs, but no. So cleared diamonds in the hope that whoever came in with ace of trumps would try to cash winning diamond. But no, as it turns out west showed out of diamonds on third one. So then led a spade with view to overruffing. Luckily when west came in with of hearts he tried a spade lead for a ruff from partner. A club lead and I was down. Just tried to put confusing options in front of whoever had the ace of hearts, worked this time, but shouldn’t have bid slam.

It’s a pretty good slam, @spungee. If West doesn’t lead a club you’ll make it. If spades break 3-3 you’ll make it. If West leads a club and you can force East to ruff with the AH you’ll make it. East didn’t have the AH but he might have. So don’t feel bad!

Very similar hand to I think hand 11 yesterday. Yesterday I went on to 6 hearts and went down one. This time I resisted temptation and left it in 4 hearts. Given that you have shown spades and hearts chances are that you will get either a club lead or diamond lead. But even on a diamond lead good defense will get you down – once cashes the Ace of hearts he has to lead a club – but he didnt so I made an undeserved 6.

Club lead: I can’t afford to take the club finesse as I’m immediately down if it doesn’t work. Tricky to play as I have to then get rid of 2 clubs in either hand. I took club A, then led diamond A and threw a club from declarer’s hand on the K. I can’t afford to take our trumps because a club lead will kill me after they take the A. So I hope the spades are 3-3. So I play to A,K, spades. When I lead teh Q, East trumps, but I overtrump with the Q. Then I have to lead a trump, West plays A and phew!! doesn’t lead a club. Led a diamond. I trump in dummy and lead Jhearts. Then I play J spades, throw my last club from South and I’m home. I don’t see a cast-iron play – I can improve on the above, but have to lead a trump when East could lead back a club.

  15. @tina , why did you play those diamonds so early? You only get 1 discard from them anyway, so it doesn’t help you anything, you’re just risking to get overruffed, when you ruff a diamond in dummy.

also, after the queen of spades gets ruffed and overruffed, you could go to dummy with a diamond ruff, and try spades again. Perhaps, East had only one trump to begin with and none left, so you’d make it.

      Hi @kaderschaufel
Good points. I played diamonds early because I wanted to ruff the third in dummy before I drew trumps. it may well have waited until later but I wasn’t worried at all about a ruff as we had so few. Good idea about trying the spades again – I didn’t think about it in the heat of the video moment!

Stopped at 5H as unhappy with clubs. Club led, taken by the Ace, took the A & KD throwing a club. Then led KH, fingers crossed, Ace took trick and to my surprise W led back a spade not a club! Played AS a H to the Q, the H back to the J to get into dummy and played all the spades throwing my hand’s loosers. I did not ruff the small diamond as I needed the JH as additional entry to dummy. Made wrong call by not taking the first club trick – obvious in hindsight. Thought had to lose another club if did not go for the finesse, and had to lose ace of H. Still not sure why West would not lead another Club after taking Heart Ace, so figured trying the finesse the only way to make the contract. Oh well. Upon reflection, if take Club Ace on first trick, can throw losing clubs on winning Diamonds and Spades. It works, but you have to have the patience it to daw Trump too early.

Great hand to bid and p lay. I bid 2 H after N opened 1 S. N supported my Hearts so I went to Blackwood to check for Aces. With only one out, I went for 6H. W led a club, and I did not try to finesse. Took my A and then did not want to get out trumps as i knew I would lose the Club K. I played my spades dumping clubs from my hand. On the third Spade E trumped and i over trumped with the Q.. Next I played trumps. W took his Ace and fortunately led Diamonds, which I took with the J. As I was in the N hand, I led a Spade, dumping my last club and W had to follow suit. So I was home. Finished 12 in the group! For a change, success!

Bid and made 6H. Not proud of myself, because it should not have made. W got off to a good start by leading a low Club, then returned a Diamond after taking the Heart A. This inexcusably bad play allowed me to draw trumps and discard my Diamond and Club losers. But my real point in posting is @Graeme. On my first try I the bidding went 1S, 2H (me), 4H, 5D (again me), – Pass! Graeme, how could I possibly want to play in Diamonds after Hearts were agreed? Even if the computers aren’t programmed to recognize control-showing cue bids as such, this should have been obviously something other than a bid to play, and at the very least the computer should have returned to 5H. So I broke off and started over, bidding as shown below – an inferior sequence. We might have ended in 6H even showing controls, but a human partner might have recognized my bypass of Clubs as a warning signal.

Yeah, I know, @pfredrix. Computer just isn’t sophisticated enough to recognise a “this can’t possibly mean this” situation. Instead it thinks “well, we don’t play cue bids so partner must have a truckload of diamonds he hasn’t previously told me about” and I know that’s not ideal but that’s what we’ve got to work with at the moment. I’ll keep working on it.

    Hi @Tina

Just checking something. You said in the video that if you want to respond to partner at the 2 level in a major suit then you must have five of the suit not just four. Is this something new because I thought responder could have four.

When I did the calculations figuring out what to do with opener’s second bid (4 heart), I did the calculation based on them having four hearts not three. Ooops. Figured that slam was on so I bid 6 hearts and made it.

Blackwood for Aces and Kings. Bid 6 Hearts with one ace and one king missing. Since opponents’ heart ace has to win, cannot afford to fin the club lead as the only way to keep is by discarding losing clubs on spades. Having won with club Ace, switched to spades and when third spade ruffed by East, over ruffed. Re-entered dummy to play one more spade to discard last losing club.
