Game! Us or them?

Big fit for both sides today. Bid ’em up! With a big trump fit, points don’t matter.

      well, I tend to agree with you. The double presumably tells you partner has only 4H or less than 10 points (I’d count 8 given the J singleton) so technically correct, but with 6 H?

  10. Profile photo of baygon2014 baygon2014 says:

    This hand is an exercise in bidding – if you get to 4 hearts then you will make 11 tricks. Some have questioned the way the computer bid the hand. If you play standard american then your opening of 1 club simply shows an opening hand – you could either have a flat hand but not enough for a no trump bid or no 5 card major. Because both North and East have passed you know that they do not have enough points to open. When west bids one spade it is saying little more than he has 5 spades and an opening hand (his void is quite helpful here.) North doubles – reason: she only has 9 points not really enough to open a new suit and clubs are certainly not on (you could hold as few as three!) So when East promises 3 spades you can see that they will possibly make 2 spades and so you need to let your partner know more about the shape of your hand – you bid 3 hearts. Partner now knows you have at least 4 hearts (you would have opened hearts if you had 5 and you would not bid hearts with fewer than 4.) From here it is easy – partner puts you in 4 hearts and you make 11.
    It is worth remembering that if you are uncertain about the meaning of the various computer bids all you have to do is click on what the computer has bid and it well tell you what the bid means. (if you are a club player that is also worth doing – you can always ask what a particular bid means; if you do not know what East’s bid means then you can ask west what her partner’s bid means.)

    @baygon2014 Thanks for your nice explanations. Just one question: isn’t North double a negative double? As it comes after an overcall of 1S? And the second one. @sunbeam – north’s negative double is the right bid – it shows about 7 – 9 points but most importantly a negative double shows that north holds at least 4 hearts – valuable bid the negative double it shows length in the unbid major and at the same time ensures that you keep your options open as long as possible. At this stage of the bidding there is still the option of a slam – certainly if south holds a void in spades then a slam is worth exploring.

    First I have to disagree with those who would open with a weak 2H. Even at favorable vulnerability the suit would be too weak for me – though not by much! Give me the Jack instead of the 6 or the 3 and I’d open 2H at favorable or even vulnerability.
    The choice of coming in later with a negative double is slightly misleading (after 1C – 1D it suggests interest in both majors), but here it seems the most flexible choice.
    More interesting is the fact that this hand is a textbook example of the Law of Total Trumps! North has six Hearts and knows from South’s response to the negative double that the partnership has 10 Hearts between them. Competing to the four level is mandatory. There are 19 or 20 total trumps, but given that the minor honor problems are overwhelmed by the monster double fit (both partnerships have two 8-card or better – in this case way better! – trump suits), we expect there to be more than the 19 or 20 playing tricks – and in fact there are 22!
    Theoretically West should compete to 4S, but even a computer would have doubts looking at the Spade suit from the West hand!

    @baygon2014

    Thanks for your rundown of today’s bidding.

    After reading about negative doubles, I pondered for a while whether to bid 3H or 4H. Below is why I chose 4H. (I’m posting this because it focuses on the crucial question you address in your post: what a bid communicates and what your partner knows.)

    As you point out, partner knew only that we had at least 12-13 points, a few clubs, and (after our heart bid) 4 hearts. What WE knew about our hand is that we had 17-18 points, including a singleton in opponents’ suit (14 hcp +1 length pt +3 for the spade singleton = 18).

    As for partner’s hand, for all we knew she had as few as 7 points, having chosen Double instead of 2H. But 7 + 18 = 25 and is enough to bid game. 7 + 13 is not.

    So if we bid 3H, we couldn’t be confident that partner would go to game, which we knew the partnership had the points for.
