Draw trumps!

This looks like an easy 12 tricks for East West in their heart contract. How would you play it from their side? ( Might have given it away in the title. )

@tina I am afraid 12 for west is a bottom board – a club lead keeps them to 11, I lead my singleton diamond first time and so they made 12 – given the bidding I should have been awake to the possibilities of either a club or spade lead..

Well — I can get them up to slam with an initial club bid. 3rd hand — o.k. — but this is never a bid that I would make in real life! Partner would appropriately shoot me! As for playing with the computer, however — well, I guess anything goes! We took ’em down 1 at that level — but I didn’t double.

A number of people have asked how they can be kept to 11 tricks. As @tina said they should make a comfortable 12 and really the club lead should make no difference. North wins the ace returns the club which is trumped in dummy , e/w should then draw trumps and make 12. This is what would happen if E/W were not a computer programme. But for some reason the computer chooses not to draw trumps and instead seeks to cash the winning diamonds giving South a ruff.
So @graeme what we really need to know is why the programme would not draw trumps – it seems that there is no good reason not to draw trumps but maybe someone can see the logic in not drawing trumps?
This is what is great about bridge – even a hand like this can throw up all sorts of puzzles!

strong 4,4,4, 1 hands are hard to bid. However, the West hand reevaluates to 24 points, after the 1H response from East, so is much too strong to settle for a 4H bid. Playing splinter bids, West could jump to 4C over the 1H response, and that should get E-W to slam, which is absolutely cold.

Although the Club K is a good lead, the only way E/W is held to 11 tricks is because the bot tried to take Diamond winners, leaving a trump in South. This should be, as pointed out, a cold slam of 12 tricks.

E W had this hand as I only had 5 points in my hand and N had the same. I think 6 H is the bid if played correctly. When I played the hand, they made 12 tricks. I should have led Clubs to begin with but hoped N had a scoring trick in my singleton D. Good hand for E W.

Managed to hold them to 10 tricks, by leading and winning with the KC, then later playing low to the E Jclub lead (knowing from trick 1 that partner had AC). W instead of trumping it discards which lets N win with the AC and lead a Diamond that I trumped.

  25. Some people have asked how they can be kept EW to 11 tricks. As @tina said they should make a comfortable 12 and a club lead should make no difference. I led the king of clubs to Dummy single C; W then took out two rounds of trump; and then lead the ace and king of D and I was able to trump the king; keeping them to 11.

  26. Played this hand twice after reading the comments. Does not make any difference to the result whether a club or diamond is led. EW still make 11. My question is why did not West open with 2C strong. West has 19 HCPs and a singleton – a very strong hand. A bit misleading to open at the 1 level and then not bid to slam. I would love some advice on that question.
