Notrump challenge

This tricky little hand is not much fun on a diamond lead. A little bird told me that a certain Sky Bridge Club teacher whose first name starts with a G was down 5 in 3NT. You can do better.

    Made 3NT.
Took the diamond lead in hand (North) then tried the losing spade finesse. West lead a diamond which I had to take in dummy. Now I played the remaining spades, throwing away clubs. Hoping for the heart Queen to drop I played the Ace and King, but no luck. Played the Jack anyway which West took with the Queen and East played the Ten. My Nine in hand was now good and lo and behold West lead a heart! Nine tricks. That was very lucky.

Ran the Spades and then led a club instead of hearts. E W took two Club tricks and then W led his Queen of Hearts giving me the 9th trick for my contract.! Great.

    Hi @clarencesq

Re your post to @Tina, is there any way to MAKE West lead a heart? LOL. Or at least encourage them?

    This is a 3NT contract attempt (after my early-day first-time-through 4H):

Trick 1. South took the East 6D lead with KD.
Trick 2. South led the TS to try to draw out the QS to promote J-T-9. TS won.
Trick 3. Used the entry to North, leading to the AD.
Trick 4. North led the JS to again try to draw out QS. This time West played the Q.
Trick 5. So here is West with the lead. He led the QD and won.

I was steeling myself for an onslaught of diamonds and clubs. I see now he was out of diamonds, so had to choose between hearts and clubs.

Trick 6. West led 4H (which gave us the JH winner, ninth trick as you were saying).

So why did West choose hearts?

I looked back at my notes and see that both Dummy and Declarer threw off a club on the West QD trick 5. I think a human West might have realized that that meant he should lead clubs!

Now that%u2019s exciting to this novice! I never would have considered the possibility of trying to steer an opponent with discards in that fashion – nor would I have checked out offense discards for that kind of clue. It looks like the club clue was wasted on our computer opponent, but wow.

Thank you – I would not have even tried this hand in NT without your post.

It is amazing how much one can learn about both defense and offense from one hand by taking the time to deconstruct a hand – something I didn%u2019t have the discipline to do until I got to Sky BC, with this pleasant playing GUI and the forum and the teachers.

      Hi @john1949

Your picture is right-side-up for me. I am on an old Windows xp computer in the Chrome browser. It is also fine on my Android phone.

By the way, my 3NT only worked by accident. I do not know why West led a heart at Trick 6. I was so intrigued by the fact that N-S had inadvertently given a signal for West to lead clubs – which was ignored fortunately – that to some degree I lost the thread of my post.
