Weak 2 with a 5-card suit

Yes, yes, a weak 2 opening bid shows a 6 card suit. But it’s 2017, it’s a game of cards and you’re allowed to do what you want. Third position, not vulnerable, great suit. Go for it!

I was third in hand and decided thatWest must be strong. I opened an off shape weak 2 hoping I might do some damage. Certainly West can make game or slam in spades.

@tina I came to much the same conclusion. threw in an interference bid and confined them to 4 spades rather than the 6 they should have been in.

  3. My hearts looked good enough to throw a spanner in the works and when N supported I bid 4 knowing that we would go down 2 or 3 tricks hoping the opposition would end up in a misfit.Ended up 500 points down and I suppose it prevented E/W from a slam in Spades

    Hello,

Would you please explain to a novice, why my partner/computer goes to 4 hearts (with just 6 points) over my weak 2 opener? Also why did W pass on a hand with 25 points and a good solid 5 card diamond suit???? in the same auction??

Hello, @llwhalle, and Happy New Year! Welcome to Sky Bridge Club.

Happy to try to help a new member. First tip is that when you want an answer from someone, its best to identify them with the ‘@’ symbol, then they will get a mail, like this one from me, and be aware of your question. In this case I would have addressed it to @tina (who will now get a copy) as she is the teacher on this hand.

On to the bridge. It seems to me that firstly, your auction precisely mirrors Tina’s, so you can’t be doing it all that wrong. The second thing to remember is that SBC replicates a Duplicate bridge table. i.e. you are not trying to beat the opponents at the table, but to score better than the others that play your hand. In this case, your weak opener has found a fit, and partner has jumped to rob EW of bidding space. EW easily make game, and have a good chance of slam, but your partner’s bid robbed them of that contract.

You will not make your 4H, but you should be able to draw trumps in 2 rounds, losing one, win 1 club trick, 2 spade ruffs, a club and a diamond ruff, and a couple of H tricks at the end, for 8 tricks. That gives you a loss of 100 points. Certainly beats my minus 490!!

Like others, I opened in third seat as if I had six hearts, not five. Partner’s hand was just as I expected from the immediate raise to 4 Hearts. (Good fit but not much outside.)

@graeme and @tina Could you give me an idea of what the hand and HCP should be to open light in 3rd seat? I did not open light and of course the opponents got the bid and took off. As a novice I sure want to understand when I should be considering this “open light” concept – since with this hand I only saw a pretty decent heart suit and a singleton – which I did not think was enough to open light.

There’s really no right or wrong to it, @dcatjones. Some say if it’s worth an overcall it’s worth an opening bid. Some open with less than that! Others say you make it too tough on partner if you act the goat too much. As far as partner is concerned you might still have 20 points so if things go awry you have to take some responsibility for your light opening. I kinda like a weak 2 opening on this hand. You’re a heart short but at least partner won’t be expecting an opening hand. It’s more preemptive, too.
