Not a Yarborough

It does get worse than this. Read on…

A yarborough except for that ten of clubs. Named after the second Earl of Yarborough, who offered an interesting bet to his whist-playing friends: a thousand to one against them picking up a hand with no card above a nine. Mathematics was on his side since the odds are 1,827 to 1. At our table, East’s takeout double of partner’s one heart opening is a bad bid, it is better to pass with hands like this. Partner has a good hand and your side should end up playing in a part score. Happy Xmas to all.

I was with that merry crowd who made 11 tricks in 3 diamonds; I would like to know how anyone could end up in 3 or 4 hearts; South has no business saying anything other than pass – if anything diamonds is to be preferred over hearts yet some ended up playing in hearts…an odd game bridge.

I agree with Baygon — it would be irresponsible to bid with this hand. An argument can be made that point count in hearts is better than diamonds — but diamonds is the preferred suit from South’s perspective. If north really wanted to be aggressive about it (after all, North has 20 hcp, a singleton and a doubleton), then he could jump to 4d. But I still think it would be irresponsible for south to bid — and the outcome would be the same. I made 11, as well.

left N in D on the off chance he has 5D as likely to rebid H if 6, made 10. However, for those who put opener back into H, I think the textbook supports you – it’s not an encouraging bid, it’s expressing a preference between 2 suits which would usually be 5:4, and H is higher score.

In 3NT the defense has 4 club tricks and the SA off the top. Making 5D requires a 3-2 diamond split plus hearts 3-3, plus the SA on onside, which comes out less than 13%, not exactly a percentage contract.

I was one of the souths that bid 3 hearts. I took north’s 3 diamonds as asking for a preference and as hearts were bid before diamonds I thought the north probably had five hearts and four diamonds and therefore thought a five two fit in a major would be superior to a four three fit in a minor. I was proved right when NS made 10 tricks.

I also bid the hearts for the same reasons given by @kakapo, allowing for the fact that North may be showing 5H and 5D as bidding descending hierachy. Also, thought a part game in a major better score than part game in a minor. And so would all they players who mae 5D but only scored 150.

    3D, made 10.
    Opening lead: East AC.

I hope this analysis is correct%u2026.

For the 700 of us that made only 10 tricks in 3 diamonds, did most of us neglect to ruff a small heart with the 3rd diamond in dummy? This had to be done before all EW diamonds were drawn, so there was a danger of an over-ruff.

And I outsmarted myself completely. Instead of trying to ruff the heart, I decided I would cleverly throw off the spade instead of taking a chance on the over-ruff. The idea was that if, after getting the lead, EW led a spade, I could ruff that in Dummy without fear of an over-ruff. So what did that accomplish? I made a sure loser out of a possible winner! LOL

I see, too, that either of two favorable splits would have facilitated the heart ruff %u2013 and it turns out this hand had both: the 3-3 in hearts (35% chance) and the 2-3 in diamonds with the 2 in West (68% divided by 2 = 34%) not including that it would also work if the diamond 7-5-4 was in West. So I think we add the percentages (35% plus 34%) and that means we had about a 70% chance of success.

I hope I am doing this right. Looking at @paulflash post about percentages, this is the opposite because we needed only one good split, not both. In his post about the overall hand, I assume he multiplied the percentages (.355 x .678 x .5 = 12%).

I like looking at the percentages occasionally because over time it should help make the probabilities a little less wildly vague.

@dyfed looking at what people achieved it is tempting to think that the best bid was game in hearts, nt or diamonds. On the basis of the first 4 bids – South’s hand remains as unattractive as ever – silence is the only option. North could of course jump to 5 diamonds, 3nt or 4 hearts – North is holding 8 tricks – so one could argue that North should have bid 3nt expecting South to bid either 4 hearts or 5 diamonds if nt was an absolute no-no. (A nt bid by North promises a stopper in spades but says nothing about the other suits; as you are holding length in clubs you would keep stum if North bid 3nt) You cannot afford to bid nt for you do not want the strongest hand on the table. But if you stayed silent over 3 diamonds then you did the right thing – on the available information that is all you can bid; get in the habit of doing otherwise and you will lose more hands than you win!
