Clever

I’m clever and I’m good at hula-hooping. If I had to choose which of the two features to highlight on my resume I’d go for clever.

South’s hand is balanced(ish) with a 5 card heart suit. What does partner want to know about?

What did you open? 21 high card points, 1 length point, balanced, a doubleton KJ, two other tenaces, and no high pips. Looks like a 2NT bid was best – partner’s bid was a pleasant surprise.

Bid 6h, but 6nt also makes because the spade queen is onside. This is a risk avoided in hearts because a club can be ruffed and a spade chucked on a diamond.

Bid 6nt but could not find my way to make the contract first time round – mainly because I did not count – with 10 hearts best play is to put the king down first – unless you are facing a 3-0 split you will find it likely that both the q and ace drop – you then can make the remainder quite comfortably.

I didn’t bid this slam, even though I bid it on a similar spade hand yesterday! Oh well, rockin’ and rollin’ for Xmas.
After advancing T, I was pleased when East popped A. This an error. He should duck. The ace of trumps is never a loser 🙂
Guess what. West was about to win his Q!
According to the Bridge Encyclopedia, running the T will be the winning option 63% of the time.
Playing small to K will win 52% of the time.
Interested players might like to write out the 8 possible layouts of the 3 cards AQ6 between East and West.
You will see that running the T is the winning option in 5 of the 8 layouts.
Playing small to the K is the winning option in only 4 of the 8 layouts.
The slight difference in percentages is because each of the 8 layouts are not exactly equally likely.
Yes, I know, the actual layout is against the odds.

@motherfloss, re your question, as I’m not sure that anyone else has answered….
Two systems to ask for Aces; Blackwood is a bid of 4NT, responses are 5C is 4 or none, 5D is one, 5H two etc. Gerber is 4C asking, 5D is 4 or none, 5H one, etc. Blackwood is default, except where NT has already been bid. Gerber can also be compromised where C’s is a natural bid. There is no need to alter anything on your settings – the computer recognises both systems. Hope that helps. It is also worth tuning in to one of Graeme’s (several!) videos explaining why you don’t always need to ask for Aces!! Have fun!

After a 2 nt bid by South North knows that south has at least 20 points. After North’s reply of 3 hearts South agrees on the suit but has very little idea about North’s value. It is therefore up to North to explore a slam which he did not so it was missed. North let me down with Bad Bidding! Hi @elizabethjane.
North’s 3D response to 2NT is a transfer showing 5 hearts. If you click on partner’s bid, it will tell you the meaning. So, when you bid 3H, you were just accepting the transfer – You weren’t promising more than xx. This is a game forcing auction. So, your 3H is forcing. Now, North rebid 3NT to show that he had a balanced hand with 5 hearts. 5332 shape is still a balanced hand.
3NT, however, is a wimp bid from North. It can be passed. When you return to 4H, he should revalue his hand and use Blackwood to drive drive to slam. He could have had as little as 4 HCP and 5 hearts.

  31. Opened 2nt, got a heart reply from ptn. Great! Now asked for aces, back to hearts, bidding 6. Just right. Made the 12.

    Lots of pondering.

BIDDING. Hmmm, a missing Ace. I stayed with 5H. Can you win being timid?? One of the recent Graeme/Bajir videos about slams suggested that at 50-50, you should go for it. I’m thinking, too, that when the rare slam opportunity presents itself, you probably do need to take the chance.

PLAY. Lots of pondering about how to deal with that awful K-J set-up. I finally decided that it couldn%u2019t be right to lead from South, so went with North%u2019s T. What a relief to see the Ace! So it worked out, but @banksia9 points out that that was an error on East%u2019s part.

Yes, @chance22, it is a ponder.
You are correct that the first lead of hearts must come from the North hand. A singleton A can’t be allowed to drah our K.
As I said before, the percentage play is to run the T rather than put up the K.
On the given hand, I would have lost 2 heart tricks if East hadn’t popped his A for no reason.
