Which Ace?

The Ace of clubs in the South hand is just what North needed. Imagine South held the Ace of hearts instead. How’s your slam looking now?

@graeme – Bid 6 spades but is the computer programmed to distinguish between first round controls and aces? When I bid 4 nt – I received 5 diamonds as the response; I would have thought 5 hearts should have been the response – we had settled on spades as our suit. (I explored the slam option on the grounds that by bidding 4 spades partner had shown that we had sufficient points for a comfortable 4 spades – had the bid over 4 nt been 5 clubs I could escape into 5 spades) I suspect 4 spades making 13 will be a flat board.

I thought the response to 4C was 4 H, but the response to 4NT would be 5D. I remember it as this.
The minimum next bid after a false is 0 or 4 then each raise up the suits indicates 1 more.
    i.e. 4C: min next bid is 4D, so 0 or 4 aces.
4NT min next bid is 5C, so 0 or 4 aces. hence 1 ace =1D

  26. reviewing this hand.

N opens with 16 high card points. S answer shows 10 pt plus S support.

If N recounts void he has 20 pts plus S 10 pts = 30. With that count N should ask for aces and at least bid 6.

All aces accounted for with the void. It makes 13 easily.

The robot missed this chance as I played as South.

  27. I played this hand a few different ways; easily making 13, with one exception (3 notrump contract). I was able to run the spades and diamonds. Each time my response to the 1 spade opening from North was 2 Hearts, which I think was correct. When North bid 3 Diamonds and I responded 4 clubs; asking for aces, I received 5 diamonds as the response; I would have thought 5 hearts should have been the response as North had one ace. When I responded with 3 nontrump to North’s 3 diamonds indicating I had a stopper in clubs; North left us in 3 notrump; so we did not get to the slam which is where the contract should have been. Only when I supported North’s spades by bidding 3 spades after his 3 diamonds did we end up in 6 spades. Question: why did North not bid 5 hearts showing 1 ace; why did North stop at 3 notrump given his strength and my indication of a club stopper?

@carolineh Are you referring to the Hearts in Dummy’s hand? They can all be thrown off on winning diamond tricks or ruffed by Declarer’s extra spades. Dummy’s losing Club can also be either thrown off or ruffed. Declarer’s losing Clubs can be ruffed in Dummy.

      Hi @greyfoxgolfer,
Thanks for the questions. First, let’s look at ace asking.
Gerber ( 4C ) asking for aces is normally only used when the previous bid was notrumps so North thinks your 4C bid is natural.
      Here’s a short lesson on that: http://skybridgeclub.com/learn/slam-gerber/
And here’s a wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerber_convention where you’ll find this
“Gerber is used primarily after notrump openings, responses, and rebids, making it a complement to Blackwood rather than a replacement. Some club players also use it after suit bidding, but most experts do not recommend this.”

As to North’s other bidding on the hand, I think he was a bit wimpy! You did great by bidding 2H and then supporting spades. It was North’s job to do the rest. 4C wasn’t the best way to go about heading for slam as I mentioned above but you shouldn’t have to be asking anyway! North just needed a bigger breakfast.

      Hope that helps!
