Strong opening bids

An opening bid of 2C shows a strong hand in Acol and Standard. It doesn’t say anything about clubs, it’s purely strength showing. The second round of bidding clarifies the opener’s shape, or at least starts to.

    Hard to pass with 4 card trump support. Unfortunately a preemptive raise to 3 got partner excited and bidding 6. It is possible to make twelve tricks though – very lucky.

    I was shocked to see partner jump to game, thought I’d been pretty clear that I had less than 6 points! I hadn’t expected 22 points from partner though! Why didn’t they open 2? Making 6 in the end. I wanted to try the trump finesse so led the AK then ruffed a third club to get to dummy. Finesse worked AND the trumps split evenly, my lucky day 🙂 East’s shortage in hearts also meant I didn’t need to lose the Q

    Thought long and hard before passing 2dx. Although we hold 9 spades between us my 4 diamonds may prove useful in getting them down. No need to lead a spade – lets see dummy first – we should only expect to make 2 spades, so our setting tricks need to come from hearts and clubs and so it proved. Lead a club, partner won and returned a club followed be a third club which I trumped, I then played a spade – partner won the queen and returned a club, the end result was that we won 2 tricks in each suit making a marginal better score than making game in 4 spades – but it is a close run thing!

    Replayed it in 6 spades and although it makes – if you go back to @graeme post on percentages you will see that it makes only on this particular lay out – you rely on a successful finesse of the king and either east or west holding Q x in hearts – so whilst on this lay out it makes (win opening lead in hand, play two rounds of clubs before trumping the third club, finesse the king of spades, then knock out the last spades (hoping for a 2/2 break) play A K of hearts (hoping for the Queen doubleton) – the odds of all three of these coming off in the one hand are not great more often than not you will have to be satisfied with 10 or 11 tricks in spades.

    Made 12 on first try. Lost diamond on first trick, trumped second diamond trick in hand, then led low club. This finesses the Q in East’s hand. From there, it was impossible to lose a trick.
    My first bid (pass) showed 0-5HCP. When partner doubled East’s 2D, I was free to say “yes i have support four of your spades, but it’s up to you how far we go” with 2S.

    The 2D overcall isn’t even close. You have only 10HCP, with 2 Q’s and a J (half your points) outside your suit. Normally a 2 level overcall would show at least opening bid strength and this hand has only 1QT. This hand could easily be passed out in 1S.

    Played in 4S and made the 10 by not clearing trumps but cross ruffing. Then tried the 3S raise shown by Joan and played and made 6S by running down clubs to get in dummy and finessing the KS successfully and then playing the Ace for the 2-2 split in S. Everything drops perfectly including the QH. Nice way to start the morning. Slightly surreal.

    I learned a lot this morning. In doing Joan’s lessons we beginners are taught to have 10-12 HC and 3 card trump support to make a 3S response. Obviously 4 trump support suggests at least 9 trumps and thus if HCP are roughly balanced one can also bid up to the 3 level on LoTT principle. In looking that up again on the internet I discovered that Marty Bergen developed his Bergen raise principles including 3S (to show 4S trump support and 0-6 HCP) from out of the maths of LoTT. I think I will add Bergen raises to my armoury.

    Had the opponents not bid, we would have played out 1S. Whenever possible I prefer to show points by bidding 1NT or, in this case, with 22HCP, 2C, to avoid this.

      @johna
      The whole idea of jumping to 3S with a weak hand and trumps is the principle of showing a fit under any circumstance when BOTH SIDES are in the bidding (i.e. the auction is competitive). It’s a different story for most players when only your side is bidding (then you need 10 – 11 points and four trumps), although people playing Bergen raises would jump to 3S with a weak hand regardless.
      Yes it’s all about the Law, which has been around for a long time now. Bergen raises are recommended especially in watchpoints.
      Interesting to hear your views!

  34. Profile photo of pfredrix pfredrix says:

    Bid 4S, made 5. First, I agree with those who feel a 2C opening was called for. (My standard is a decent 5-carder or better and more quick tricks than losers, which the N hand just satisfies.) Second, @joanbutts, I play Jacoby 2NT and Bergen raises, neither of which the Skybridge computers recognize. So in a game I would bid have bid your preemptive 3S, but the Skybridge computers play a jump raise as a game force. Point #3, unlike @paulflash I have no problem with the 2D overcall. I also would have made one on this hand (well, maybe not at unfavorable vulnerability, depending how the evening was going). An overcall does not require opening strength; I play my overcalling partner for no more than 1 to 1-1/2 tricks on defense unless he has shown more. Finally, for those who made 12 tricks, you had no justification for bidding it so don’t beat yourselves up. A slam bid on hands like N-S is a big loser in the long run.

      Thanks for your comments. They are most interesting. The emphasis on showing trump support under any circumstance and forgetting about points in competitive situations is a stumbling block for many players. Knowing how many trumps you hold between you is so important when making the decision about whether to bid one more or to double or pass. If only we always got it right!
